The Buddha's death is called the parinirvana, which signals the moment when he moves into an eternal blissful state, free of any suffering or future rebirths. This state, known as nirvana, is the ultimate goal for followers of Buddhism.<br><br>During the 8th century, a colossal depiction of the Buddha's parinirvana was the focus of worship at a monastic establishment on the island of Sri Lanka off the southeastern coast of India. By the 19th century, the site had fallen into ruins, and commercial photographer Joseph Lawton was selected by the British Archaeological Committee in Kandy, Sri Lanka, to document the site. Lawton's intentional inclusion of a Sri Lankan figure in a posture of adoration and a colonial Englishman clambering over the ruins provides a sense of the sculpture's impressive scale.

The Babanki, one of the chiefdoms that comprise the Cameroon Grassfields, value elaborately carved chairs or thrones. They serve as memorials or visual records that have helped to mark kingships through the ages in the wider Cameroon Grassfields. As prestige objects and a high art form, thrones convey authority and royalty; a new king commissions a royal throne to commemorate his ascension. This example is considered by scholars as one of the finest in the United States. It is unusual because it features male and female figures mounted on stylized leopards, revered as the embodiment of stately power and sacredness. Other notable examples have only male equestrian figures. Five additional leopards frame the openwork back rest. The lower part of the throne is covered by three undulating rings bearing 24 heads<br>carved in the typical Babanki style.

In this hanging scroll, an egret walks along the shores of a salt marsh where reeds abundantly grow. Native to Pyongyang, the artist Yang Ki-hun had no rival in bird-and-flower themes. The Taedong River estuary, one of Pyongyang’s beloved natural sites, may have been Yang’s favorite spot to observe and sketch various water birds.<br><br>Yang treated his subjects of flora and fauna with an observant naturalist’s view, yet his choice of subjects—an egret and reeds—is deeply rooted in traditional symbolic language: the egret stands for the scholarly reclusive life, while reeds indicate humility and modesty.

Many celadons such as this miniature wine pot were repaired with gold lacquer. Termed <em>kintsugi </em>(literally meaning “gold joinery”) in Japanese, this method of repair highlights broken parts with glittering gold mixed with lacquer. Initiated in 15th-century Japan, the technique follows a popular aesthetic concept called “wabi-sabi,” which finds beauty in imperfect things. <br><br>Since many Goryeo celadons were considered extremely rare by early 20th-century Japanese collectors, their imperfect condition, which must have been caused by the recklessness of excavation activities, is prominently highlighted, as seen here in the spout and handle, with repair in gold.

New info thread! RE: upcoming Blue Horizon acrylic charms + tarot cards.
