Beelitz Heilstätten, located near Berlin, is one of Germany’s most famous lost places and has a rich, multi-layered history spanning over a century. Initially constructed between 1898 and 1930, the complex covers around 200 hectares and consists of about 60 buildings, making it one of the largest hospitals and sanatoriums of its kind in Europe. During World War I and II, Beelitz Heilstätten served as a military hospital and sanatorium for wounded and ill soldiers. In the interwar and postwar years, the hospital continued to expand, adding more specialties, including surgery and physical therapy, and became a symbol of medical innovation. After World War II, the site was appropriated and operated by the Soviet Red Army, becoming the largest Soviet military hospital outside the USSR until 1994. Following the Soviet withdrawal, many buildings fell into disuse and decay, transforming Beelitz Heilstätten into a haunting example of urban abandonment, beloved by photographers and urban explorers for its architecture and atmospheric ruins.
