In 2003, Hideo Kojima created a GBA game that FORCED you to go outside.
Boktai had a built-in light sensor, no real sunlight meant your weapons stayed dead. Some bosses were literally impossible to beat indoors.

still waiting for retroachievements to pump out cheevos for boktai 3 cause that’s not out yet
but there are some for 1 and 2 at least (if anyone cares about that, I do, it sweetens the deal me thinks)

Oh, damn, there's a new version of the Everdrive GBA that has support for the solar sensor and tilt/gyroscope functionality. That should push support to just about 100%, including the Wario games, Boktai, and the Kirby pinball games. About the only exception I can think of is Drill Dozer's rumble.

I remember catching the demo for the first time and going, "Oh shit they get it". I probably would recommend this to people who wanna dip their toes into Boktai, cause it really feels like an actual fifth game (in my mind at least).

It's 54°F outside today, so I get to enjoy lunch with some Boktai again! I managed to get enough sunlight since my last post to get all of the branches of the Solar Tree fully healed! Now all I need to do is make it bloom! Huzzah!

Occasionally when I go looking for something in the boktai discord I come across names of people that used to be very active there. Then I check when their last message in the server was and it was often years ago. It always makes me a bit sad.
