I decided to have the ribbon attach to the front cover so it can be tied on the back or the side so as not to obscure the title/front. I dug a channel in the back of the bookboard and glued the ribbon in there before I glued the flypaper and endpaper down (i would use a flatter ribbon next time)

i can already tell in the press the bookcloth isn't as crisp around the spine as i'd have liked. probably a combination of panicking a bit because the glue was setting very quickly, poor technique, and maybe some misshapen glue on the spine binding itself. things to work on, i suppose
okay it's 1:50AM but i think i have made something resembling a book. i put another coat of glue on the spine, then some of the scrim, then bookcloth. turns out the glue does not leave you a lot of time to adjust but i did the best i could. i'm leaving it in the vise overnight to press it into shape

Woah the edges are similar to how I was dealing with a moleskin style book binding yesterday! It was my first one so I’m hoping I get a bit better but it was the best looking out of the three forms I boned up on to help students during BFA season (I will say F off Coptic binding that one sucks man)

done! a little pamphlet but with a twist of a hard cover. the lotus and title are layered stencils, which worked!!! I can't recall where i got the green bookcloth, but the endpapers are chiyogami and came from an etsy shop in CA

hooray this order shipped, should be able to pick it up tomorrow after work and then i will have a cutting mat. and some scrim and bookcloth
caved and ordered a cutting mat as well. another one of those things i've thought about buying for a while.

picked some random physical store that does online orders on the side. this is most of the confirmation e-mail i got. wasn't expecting poetry

nothing super special mind, just want to bind some scientific papers so i don't have to read them off a screen and i can take notes

but i might get a little silly with it. the craft place i ordered a cutting mat also sold small bits of bookcloth and scrim

trying to decide what title treatment i want to do

my stencil material is too thick (i really want to try painted stencil titles) so i used some heat transfer vinyl i had on hand with both paper and bookcloth and not sure i'm 100% happy with either...

Finished up the other bookbinding project today. First time using this particular bookcloth, and while the foiling is readable (another experiment), I'm not sure how durable it will be long-term, so it got three coats of a matte finish just in case.

don't get me wrong, i love a good tiny book! they are fun and charming! but that's not the only option for a <5k book and i want to explore more formats 👀

Even the endbands are… very individual. Look at the special effect in the middle of the book! It's twisted! 😅

I also learned that the curtain I used for the spine is not good for filled bookcloth. It's all learning and practising here.

Filled bookcloth experiments. Curtains and my old PJs. Not surprisingly at all, the curtains lost the sheen when being filled. Both for the new BuJo, because I couldn't possibly pass up the chance of a tartan BuJo. :D

Also, doing new things like filled bookcloth and cooking my own paste, so experimentations going on as well.

It's my birthday weekend. So far, I've gone out for coffee with the hubby, cleaned my office, ordered like 6 kinds of bookcloth, and finalized the cover design for this anthology set.

I think im gonna sit down and start on a new bind tonight - you know, for a treat.

Back in June, when Dad had a 3-week-stint in hospital out-of-town (& Mom stayed with him), I went thru some of the boxes at their new house & did some light re-arranging...setting-out some of Dad's books in the living room. It was then I re-connected with this gem from my childhood #ThingThursday

/Last/ time the glue seeped through the outer cloth of the cover. So this time I made bookcloth that had a thicker, absorbent backing. Still leaked big black splotches through...

But correct bookboard is en route. Pretty cover paper aquired. The signatures are folded/punched.
Soon. Soon.

2/ signature booklet, and a casebound blank book with bookcloth spine, longstitch binding, a folio of blank pages, and decorative paper covers and inside covers. They did really well learning the new skills, from paper-folding to sewing bindings to gluing a casebound cover together.

Finally got around to binding the first half of my favorite #ghoap fic, "All That's Said in the Low Light" by headlocket, and can I just say she came out fucking BEAUTIFUL? So many firsts, too: first time using homemade bookcloth and my first rounded spine! #pap3rbinds

The last tools I still need to acquire are some weights, which should at least be simple and cheap.

Then bookcloth, endbands, more boards, and maybe glue if the old bottle of PVA I remember seeing in some drawer is already dry 😅
