But a deeper and still unresolved question is the following: why does the child mime everything? Why does he play at everything? Why does he have so much trouble becoming the little stuffed being that we want to make of him? Why does he have too much and so much trouble, and that even many cannot manage it, - to adjust to these algebraizations that we impose on him? Why do we find the gesture that always and everywhere reappears? Why the liturgies, why the traditions? Why all these festivals where the gesture plays the greatest role? Why the flags? Why these decorations with the sword that comes to rest on the shoulder? Why all these social gestures? Why this politeness? Why these greetings? Why finally from one end of the world to the other does the gesture appear as a means of intercommunication? This is the real problem and I did not have the naive pretension, last year, to solve it for you, but you see that this is the great human law. "Man is the greatest mimic of all animals."
