We went to Iceland got on the coach at 9:45 at night drove out into the countryside and stood in a field behind a church with about six other coach loads of people. We saw it, it was great, but also six coach loads of people who didn't understand the part of turning the flash off on your camera/ipad

At least on the European side, it's much stronger than that. In the countryside in Northern Germany you can see it with the naked eye.
