#destreaming
As a parent of a soon to be high school grad, I am livid that we not only lived through the ridiculous destreaming in high school, but now we face limited options due to poor management of post secondary. I’m looking for something not to be disappointed about with my kid’s future…

I got to meet folks from Tokona te Raki, an organization that is tackling academic streaming to promote educational equity for Māori children in New Zealand.

I shared some insights about destreaming in Ontario and they captured them in their annual report.

Oh no, @frankdomenic.bsky.social has triggered the vegans on IG & they don’t understand that Doug Ford absolutely does not give a single solitary fuck about animal welfare or animal rights.

Reminds me of when Ford did destreaming. His intentions are bad. He does not deserve benefit of the doubt.

After a successful rollout, Waterloo Region’s public board is taking destreaming a step further, extending courses into Grade 10 to keep academic pathways for students open.

Friends at @wr-dsb.bsky.social created a terrific video in support of destreaming and the real positive impacts that it is already making on students and communities.

Smaller classes = more personalized instruction. It's totally doable if there is political will (there isn't, because old man Lecce's push for destreaming paid lip service to equity but was actually rooted in austerity).

Just finished marking a set of grade 9 math tests. Ontario's destreaming of grade 9 doesn't work for students. We're a few years into it but to my knowledge there has been no analysis to see if it's achieving any of the goals it was supposed to accomplish. #onted #onpoli

It was great to connect w/ math education leaders from across Ontario at the @omcamath.bsky.social retreat. Our keynote @mrvalencia24.bsky.social was lively, inspiring & insightful.

I also had chats on how to strengthen destreaming in many districts. As always, our best work is done together.

I recently posted about how destreaming is going in the TDSB, including how it is helping to narrow the achievement and opportunity gap for students with disabilities.

Is destreaming underfunded? Yes. But one would argue so is most things in education.

It's been several years of destreaming in the Toronto District School Board. While critics will argue it's not going well, our system data says otherwise.

Check out my post, which shows how more students are more ready for success in postsecondary education:

I’ve looked at math credit accumulation & achievement data pre- and post-pandemic/destreaming (that’s probably the subject people are worried about the most). I can’t share it just yet, but I definitely will when I can.

That’s a great read, thank you for taking the time to write it.

Has there been a look at achievement data and credit accumulation at the TDSB post destreaming?

Thanks for your post. Destreaming isn’t easy, but that’s where school improvement efforts need to be. High schools need to make learning accessible & effective - it shouldn’t be a brick wall for Grade 9s.

I wrote something to help teachers. Hope it comes in handy:

Math Learning Partners from @tdsbmath.bsky.social, in partnership w/ @oiseuoft.bsky.social, ran the 4th & final day of our PL series on destreaming Grade 9 math. Teachers experienced geometry & financial literacy expectations, and small-group instruction to push student thinking forward. #EduSky

As “learning loss” continues to be a post-COVID narrative in #OntEd schools, it’s more important than ever to identify & address classroom, school, and system environments that disable students. Structural inclusion is happening via destreaming, but teaching practices need to be inclusive, too.

"Destreaming" as done in Ontario has always meant "defunding while hiding behind lip service to anti-racism" and it's honestly the worst kind of con. Hurting _every child_ while coopting the language of equity-seeking groups is bottom of the barrel, even for Ford's government.
September 16, 2024 at 11:29 PM
There was a failed destreaming experiment in San Francisco, but it’s slightly different than what’s going on in Ontario. @mayak46.bsky.social knows a lot about that.

You're welcome. I wonder if any research is available on the impact of destreaming? I teach in Ontario and we're still grappling with how to meet the needs of grade 9 students in a destreamed math class.
