During Suda’s tenure, at least 60 employees — many from the senior executive team — were fired, laid off, or pressured to leave across departments. These include human resources, curatorial, digital content, communications, facilities, conservation, the library, visitor services, and more, according to museum insiders. Suddenly gone in the fall of 2024 without explanation to the staff was Carlos Basualdo, earlier promoted by Suda to deputy director and the museum’s first-ever chief curator; he was highly respected and held several important relationships with collectors and top international artists like Jasper Johns and Bruce Nauman. Basualdo was named director of the Nasher Sculpture Center in Dallas in April.

During the 2024 US presidential campaign, Section 230 reform/repeal was debated not too loudly, which I wrote about here: www.dailydot.com/news/harris-...
The next several years may bring darker times for other Big Tech companies, particularly social media platforms. Both Republicans and Democrats have expressed dissatisfaction with their broad immunities under Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act. The provisions largely shield platforms from civil liability for user-generated content, so long as they act in good faith. If the next president decides to really go after Big Tech, it’s probable they will target Section 230. Harris has been circumspect on Section 230. While she hasn’t said it should be repealed, in 2019, she said, “We will hold social media platforms accountable for the hate infiltrating their platforms, because they have a responsibility to help fight against this threat to our democracy.” This time around, she’s been even quieter about Section 230, potentially due to her strong backing from Silicon Valley. More than 200 venture capitalists, startup founders, and tech leaders have pledged to support Harris, including notable names like LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman. Trump issued an executive order in May 2020 seeking to peel Section 230 liability protections away from online platforms. Once out of office, however, Trump launched his own platform, Truth Social, with terms of service relying on 230. Part of Trump’s animosity toward social media companies is likely due to his belief that they engage in what conservatives have come to refer to as viewpoint discrimination. For years, they’ve complained that social media platforms discriminate against their views. Trump’s website states that he “is absolutely committed to dismantling and destroying the left-wing censorship regime.” His plan includes “banning federal agencies from censoring speech, stopping federal funding for all non-profits and academic programs engaged in censorship, passing a digital bill of rights, and enacting landmark legislation to drastically limit the ability of big social media platforms to restrict free speech.”

Users must often share sensitive personal data, such as government IDs or biometric information, with private third-party age verification vendors and Age verification is usually tied to an account, meaning if you don’t want to have to verify every visit you must now sign up and log in to access adult content. The Online Safety Act effectively encourages creating accounts on multiple porn websites! These records become a liability in the event the website suffers from a hack, potentially exposing the personal information and viewing history for users of that service. This has already happened to data stored with Discord, think centralised government ID solves this? Estonia lost 286,438 citizens data in a breach. https://therecord.media/estonia-says-a-hacker-downloaded-286000-id-photos-from-government-database Facial recognition is proven to be inadequate creating censorship. https://nvlpubs.nist.gov/nistpubs/ir/2024/NIST.IR.8525.pdf This means a significant number of adults attempting to access legal content will be incorrectly blocked and a significant fraction of younger teens could potentially be granted access to adult services while their parents are not watching them because they have been given a false sense of security that the state has their back instead of being encouraged to use the tools that are available to us. Age gates push citizens young and old to risk the least regulated sites, with the fewest safeguards, and therefore the places most likely to carry harmful or even illegal content. Educational and other legal content is already being blocked from citizens who should be entitled to view it. The act contains provisions that will mandate client side scanning of our encrypted communications. This means that big tech’s defective algorithm’s will run on your phone sending your private messages and sext’s to be manually reviewed. Oppose the online safety act if you agree that Police should continue to require a warrant to tap your phone. They call this “chat control” in Europe and they want to bring it here https://fightchatcontrol.eu/ Compliance demands drive out smaller communities and centralise control in large corporate platforms. This doesn’t just effect porn websites, compliance costs are forcing smaller services to shut down and future services will not exist to compete, locking in the internet's current course of enshitification. Privacy features available elsewhere in the world are not being launched in the UK thanks to our unwise approach to regulation.
