Realised that my wee SNES pad also allows me to play these with a dpad that doesn't make me hate myself. Let's have a wee go at the clear.

The activity begins as usual but this time the inputs to hit in time are all over the controller instead of localized to face buttons or bumpers. You can kind of do the first set, but then it asks you to do a sequence that is basically impossible without a macro—an L3 press, dpad hits, buttons etc.

I made a simple rebind menu that will hide binds the player isn't supposed to know about yet. I use non-standard binds, so I had to do this even for a small prototype.
I can repurpose this for any other Godot projects as well, so the time hasn't been wasted.

I have a bone to pick with you, Bubsy 4D:
the option to enabled tank controls and "play it like classic Bubsy" is just a low-effort joke! The turn rate is piss-slow, the right stick AND dpad are totally unused, there's no way to sidestep, etc etc
I won't take this tank controls slander! lawyer up

And... the dpad on my Xbox 360 controller finally broke. I'd been having issues with the right bumper not always activating but they cleared up. No such luck this time.
Fitting that it broke as I was trying to figure out how to remap controls in Retroarch.
But it was a good twelve year run!

Great!
GB4 has a lot of buttons and button combinations but you can extensively customize them.
You frequently need to hold down a shoulder button and face button for skill shortcuts, but after remapping skill modifiers to the dpad I was flowing between weapons easily.

I've never used an NES controller, and before buying my SNES I hadn't used an SNES one in years either. And every Nintendo cross dpad I've tried from the Wii onwards has been crap, so I always wondered why people loved them. Then I bought my SNES and was like "Oh, yeah, these used to be great".

if square enix were not cowards they would have put out a " final fantasy tactics controller " which is the exact same thing as a regular controller but the dpad is at a 45 degree angle

Agreed! Something about emulating it feels off on dpad controls.

This is what I mean. Forgot what it's called. They later called it something batman related. But to me, it's shaped like a dpad.

I bought the Flydigi Dune Fox the other day on a whim for $12, shocked by how much I like it.
Hall effect sticks, shockingly nice dpad, good buttons. Definitely feels a little cheap but for $12 I don't mind.
I wouldn't pay MSRP tho

The buttons work, you can press em. Wow.
The dpad is suspended over a new technic rubber block, A & B are suspended over a piece of elastic, and start and select are basically rubber wheels that you fit into a slot. The thing is filled with other lego building techniques that are new to me.

Finished the Lego Gameboy, and holy crap is it amazing! From the “cart” clicking in, the insert screens that change as you shift it around, to the buttons and dpad actually being able to be pressed due to some really clever inner bit, this is probably one of my fav Lego things I’ve ever built!

ok played A Few Quick Matches and it felt pretty natural BUT it still has the caveat that its real hard to dash dance with this
its the same problem pretty much every setup like this has
of course you can turn dpad movement on and do it perfectly

This was actually p neat to put together, lots of little details that ultimately aren't seen like the pieces under the dpad matching the color of the stock pads and the zelda cartridge specifically having a battery piece

Fun-BSPD-fact:
It's impossible to avoid jumping over this ledge using dpad controls.
The ledges seem to have a built-in mechanic to pull you in if you approach from a jumpable direction.
Is it really a faithful remake if you literally cannot finish the game without using the analog controls? 🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔

figured out how to bind my controller for pcsx2
i guess this controller's dpad registers as an analog input. pcsx2's deadzone was 0 so it would just go crazy on inputs from the dpad. anyways maybe i will choose to suffer more at gradius 5 now

8bitdo has a Genesis/ Saturn inspired pad called the M30. Imo it's got the best dpad you can find on their controllers.

btw if you're wondering I never stopped holding right during that jump. it's a consistent problem with it on top of it failing "the contra test" constantly by giving me up and down non stop while holding dead right. very cool they invented *new* dpad problems instead of making them better
