"New"? Sounds a bit like feudalism.

"capitalism collapses back down in to feudalism" is a pretty common take among marxists online but I think it would have been fairly shocking to Marx, who understood capitalism to be the system that replaced feudalism

Have you heard of corporate feudalism?

It’s an economic system where large corporations (oligarchs) control essential resources (donate to “pay” the military), limit workers’ rights, and dominate the markets.

The public has only an illusion of choice.

Seems relevant.

Untenable is right. We’re headed to feudalism.
This is untenable.

If you’re attacking people who think this is wrong, you’re doing the bidding of the ultra rich while they laugh at you behind your back.

And that’s...the heart of it. Most aren’t angry that someone succeeded...they’re angry that success...buys exemption.

When the richest pay a lower effective rate than teachers or nurses...and then spend millions to keep it that way...it’s not free enterprise anymore...it’s feudalism with better PR

Fascist states have no defining econ principles because they’re not advanced states. Fascism doesn’t practice capitalism not because it isn’t conservative, but because it regresses political theory to the point where less advanced systems like mercantalism or even feudalism are more apt descriptors.

Yes...the problem isn’t success...it’s the system...that rigs the scoreboard.

When billionaires write the tax code ...through lobbyists...capitalism stops being competition and becomes feudalism...with better branding. Tax fairness isn’t punishment...it’s maintenance.

It actually makes perfect sense when you consider a goal of feudalism. Intellectualism is a (quasi) meritocratic belief that is antithetical to a caste system that asserts inherent superiority on the basis of one's birth. A lot of the Ivy League are legacy and they want to keep it that way.
it’s kind of funny that the New York Times, which is probably at least 50% Ivy League on the editorial side, is one of the primary drivers of contemporary anti-intellectualism, but not really funny in a good way

The 18th-century shift from militaries raised privately by nobles to standing armies financed by taxes is one of the central moves in the creation of the modern state. Trump is dialing it back to feudalism. www.nytimes.com/2025/10/24/u...

It's kind of amazing that a symbolic architectural monument to democracy is being transformed into a symbolic architectural monument to naked grift and techno-feudalism right before our eyes.

OK fine what's a readable explainer on why historians don't like the category "feudalism"? I stg the answer better not be: because the category has fuzzy boundaries and there's always nuances in the details of how things worked in any given location.

The problem isn't even that the oligarchs own the media. The problem is that a vast majority of people think they're so smart that they don't believe they're being manipulated.
The Dunning-Kruger Effect leads us directly into neo-feudalism.
The richest man on earth owns X.

The second richest man on earth is about to acquire TikTok and his family could soon own both Paramount and Warner Bros.

The third richest man owns Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp.

The fourth richest man owns The Washington Post.

See the problem here?

Very much enjoying the work of @ottoenglish.bsky.social, who does not shy away from controversial views like “Nazis are bad” and “feudalism wasn’t nice”.

Obviously, if you had anything resembling a coherent world view you'd pick a fucking side because the imagined destination of each differs significantly.

One is feudalism rebranded, the other is actually trying to improve things.

The fact that this isn't glaringly fucking obvious...

Right! That's what kills me. This is all corporate greed. And they are doing this to get people desperate and work like serfs.

They want to revive feudalism and it's gross.

That's their plan, to privatize all that we currently consider government responsibility. Then our taxes go directly to the oligarchs. It's 21st century feudalism. And if you don't know what feudalism means, read this.

Liberalism used to be a fighting faith that dismantled feudalism, abolished hereditary privilege, and fueled revolutions that replaced empires with republics. It expanded suffrage, ended slavery, and empowered movements for women's rights and civil rights.
