Kim Gordon described the music of The Raincoats perfectly: „They seemed like ordinary people playing extraordinary music. They had enough confidence to be vulnerable and to be themselves without having to take on the mantle of male rock/punk rock aggression…“

Alongside ‘The Piper at the Gates of Dawn’, this is certainly Pink Floyd's most exciting album: David Gilmour had replaced Syd Barrett, making this an album of transition – or as Nick Mason put it: "It's a cross-fade rather than a cut."

The Vibrators were not among the most popular punk bands of their time. Their second album, V2, is characterised by a strange brooding atmosphere that pervades the entire album and culminates in the stunning final track, ‘Troops of Tomorrow’.

A difficult choice: there may be better Dead Can Dance albums, but I have a special connection to 'Spiritchaser' because this album accompanied me through the hardest and most agonising period of my life and gave me hope and confidence...

I loved the album ‘Voyager’ from the very beginning. It combines Celtic elements with the chill-out atmosphere of its predecessor, ‘The Songs of Distant Earth,’ and never feels intrusive: simply a beautiful piece of music.

On its release in 1980m this album showcased a completely new, powerful sound, coupled with a completely new attitude: the new romantics were born, except that these guys sounded more rough and adventurous than all the other new romantic bands.

‘Tallulah’, the fifth studio album by The Go-Betweens from 1987, is, in my opinion, the unexcelled masterpiece of this Australian band, which is already blessed with a wealth of masterpieces, anyway.

Uncompromising, deeply disturbing, unsettling, challenging, shocking: all these terms can be used to describe This Heat's debut album from 1979, which essentially became the blueprint for an entire genre.

Gosh, the Monks were so far ahead of their time. At a time when conventional beat music was all the rage, these GIs stranded in Germany produced the most monotonous yet powerful noise that would become the blueprint for many bands that followed.

This sampler is an invaluable historical document, as it shows how musically heterogeneous, diverse and open the pre-hardcore punk scene in San Francisco was in the early 1980s: the spectrum ranged from Dead Kennedys to Tuxedomoon.

Warren Zevon, who died at the age of 56, was an outstanding and brillant songwriter who really deserved a career similar to that of Billy Joel or Elton John – but he was probably too cynical, too political and too dark-humoured for that.

What a strange bunch this avantgarde band from San Francisco is, whose members have remained anonymous to this day. And to be honest, some of their albums are simply unlistenable nonsense – but this album from 1980 is truly outstanding.

In my opinion, this is one of the best Irish folk albums ever made, and it is extremely unfortunate that it is difficult to obtain nowadays: Sinead's gorgeous and powerful version of ‘Óró Sé do Bheatha 'Bhaile’ alone is absolute outstanding.

In 1979 ‘Reproduction’ appeared on the scene and, thanks to its innovative use of synthesisers, sounded like nothing before it. This was not the pleasing synth-pop of the band's later incarnation, but rather dark & sinister synth doom.

This fantastic punk album from 1981 is special because it does not contain those classic fast paced punk songs, but spreads a dark and brooding atmosphere. Moreover, the lyrics paint an accurate picture of Thatcher’s England at that time.

Somehow, this album unintentionally became the soundtrack to a breakup—and the sometimes melancholic mood of those songs was a perfect fit. Even today, this album still takes me back to that time when I was lost between hope and despair.
