In L6 #ALevelMaths #FurtherMaths #MathsToday we made our own slide rules (www.sliderulemuseum.com/REF/scales/M...) and learned how to use them for multiplication and division.

Teri won the cosine rule race, where pupils chose slide rule or tables to answer a problem (she used the slide rule).

Great question in #FurtherMaths while studying matrices for stretches today. If the determinant of the matrix is the area scale factor, what happens when the determinant is zero? I told the class to trial it and find out. Lovely bit of investigative work testing out their ideas.

After PiXL conference yesterday I have been thinking about exposing students to mark schemes and getting them to be in the shoes of an examiner more often.

Here's my dodgy solution to a CP1 series question, i'll give it to my class to mark and spot the mistake(s).

Finding the coordinates of S is fun!
The curve with parametric equations x=t^2-2t-2, y=9t-t^3 is shown in purple. This forms a loop, intersects the x-axis at the origin, a negative value (labelled A) and a positive value (labelled B). The curve has a local maximum point (Q) in the second quadrant and a local minimum point (R) in the fourth quadrant. The extreme left-most point (P) lies in the second quadrant. The curve intersects itself at a point S in fourth quadrant, to the left of the minimum point. The instruction, in red, is to find the coordinates of points, A, B, P, Q, R and S.

In Upper Sixth #FurtherMaths #ALevelMaths #MathsToday we found the second derivative for an implicitly defined function and used @desmos.com to find the inflection points on the curve.
The implicitly defined curve x^2-4xy+y^3=25 together with its two inflection points at (-2.91, 1.25) and (7.92, 1.25)
