Το εξώφυλλο του κόμικ "Ο Τηλέμαχος και το δέρας" του Χάρρυ Σάξον. Η “κάμερά” μας είναι ένα περιστέρι που μόλις είχε καθίσει στα κάγκελα του μπαλκονιού Η τρίτη σελίδα του κόμικ "Ο Τηλέμαχος και το δέρας". Το περιστέρι από την προηγούμενη σελίδα βλέπει κάτι και πετάει τρομαγμένο. Βλέπουμε το πόδι του κεντρικού χαρακτήρα, φοράει σαγιονάρες και έχει μακριά νύχια ζώου στα δάχτυλά του. Η τέταρτη σελίδα του κόμικ "Ο Τηλέμαχος και το δέρας". Βλέπουμε τον κεντρικό χαρακτήρα του κόμικ. Είναι ένα ανθρωπόμορφο λιοντάρι. Φοράει σορτσάκι και αμάνικο μπλουζάκι. Ανοίγει το ψυγείο για να βγάλει κρύο νερό, χασμουριέται και μετά κλείνει το ψυγείο και φεύγει από την κουζίνα. Η πέμπτη σελίδα του κόμικ "Ο Τηλέμαχος και το δέρας". Ο Τηλέμαχος όπως βγαίνει από την κουζίνα κρατώντας ένα ποτήρι νερό, βλέπει την σύντροφό του στο γραφείο της -η οποία είναι μια ανθρωπόμορφη πάνθηρας- και την ρωτάει αν θέλει νερό αφού πρώτα της κάνει ένα αστειάκι που το ζευγάρι λέει συχνά μεταξύ του (είναι μια ατάκα από την φανταστική ταινία “Η άλκη στο ναυτικό”). Η κοπέλα λέει πως έχει σκάσει και δεν θέλει νερό και ο Τηλέμαχος πάει στο γραφείο του. Η έβδομη σελίδα του κόμικ "Ο Τηλέμαχος και το δέρας". Ο Τηλέμαχος παίρνει τηλέφωνο κάποιον Ερρίκο Ε. Για δουλειά. Δεν ακούμε τι του λέει ο Ερρίκος, αλλα ο Τηλέμαχος φαίνεται ξαφνιασμένος. Η όγδοη σελίδα του κόμικ "Ο Τηλέμαχος και το δέρας". Ο Τηλέμαχος μιλάει στον Ερρίκο στο τηλέφωνο. Λέει πως δεν είναι σίγουρος γι αυτό που του λέει ο Ερρίκος και φαίνεται ανήσυχος μήπως η εκδοτική του θέλει να ακυρώσει μια σειρά βιβλίων που έγραφε. Ο Ερρίκος φαίνεται να τον διαβεβαιώνει πως δεν είναι αυτό το ζήτημα, ο Τηλέμαχος χαλαρώνει και υπόσχεται να τον ξαναπάρει τηλέφωνο μόλις αποφασίσει. Όταν κλείνει το τηλέφωνο, ο Τηλέμαχος κοντοστέκεται λίγο κοιτάζοντας το και μετά λέει “σκατά”.

The book is about community and relationships; who lived where and what they did, who their children and siblings were, how it all connects to the artist’s family and childhood. It’s shot through with pain and injustice, both personal and historical - the undercurrent is grief. #comics #GreekComics
An ink drawing of two concrete apartment blocks 12 storeys high. The text talks about how they are the tallest buildings in Thessaloniki, how the long distance coaches used to be parked underneath. He also notes the area was a Jewish ghetto before the Second World War, and very poor. When everyone who lived there was transported to Auschwitz, their neighbours looted their homes left nothing standing. The last page. A self portrait of the artist in a black suit and tie - a funeral suit. There’s a quote from Taktsis’ The Third Wedding Wreath: The death of someone we love is like a cut from a sharp knife. The pain comes later, when the wound grows cold.

Sometimes the pages become full-on comics, but most of the book is drawings of houses or people accompanied by a block of text. It’s bittersweet, psychgeograpic, very personal but touching on history, and bracingly unsentimental.

The text describes how one of the siblings who lived here, tall, sturdy, with a white moustache, had a tour bus that took people to the seaside., “Our mother took us swimming in Nea Kallikrateia, Nea Irakleia. We would burn to charcoal in the sun. We would burn to charcoal in the sun. Returning home at midday sizzled, our mother would slather our backs in yoghurt to cool the burning of our backs. It was the era before sunblock…” This comics page tells the story of a summer trip to Naousa. The panels show a stone house “I remember little about the place”, a boy’s legs walking down steps “the squeaking of the wooden stairs and floor, the tiled courtyard”. He talks about the latch operated by a string, and how he didn’t know to open it. There’s a panel of a boy knocking with both hands on a huge wooden gate. A panel of the boy climbing a cherry tree; the text says the visited a hillside orchard. More cherry panels: he shows himself wearing paired cherries on their stems on his ears as earrings, which I did too, and says that if you don’t harvest them with stems on, there won’t be cherries on that twig next summer. I didn’t know this.

The book begins with some full page drawings which he explains he made in a time of great stress, and of which they are expressive, and continues into drawings of old buildings accompanied by text.

Going into more detail about the books I picked up at Comicdom this year, beginning with Τα Νεαπολίτικα by Thanasis Petrou, because I found it moving, maybe because, even though I’m not from Neapoli, or even Thessaloniki, I am of his generation and feel similarly about place. #GreekComics #comics
Ta Neapolitika: a travelogue through childhood memory. Thanasis Petrou. Published by Oblik It’s labelled Graphic Novel but it’s a graphic memoir really, a distinction publishers rarely make.

I also met (and fangirled at) probably my favourite Greek cartoonist, Thanasis Petrou. I bought three books.
Two look like urban memoirs, maybe psychogeography, and one continues his 20th Century Greek history series with the arrival of Asia Minor refugees in the 20s.
