Hello theatre pals, and everyone. It’s nice to see you here.
I live in Athens now, and I’ve been taking a lot of pictures, relearning my way around the old place.

I know there are more important things to be worked up about than a lot of people being a bit silly about a great actor delivering a speech, but it’s really horrible thinking about the other things, and even worse posting about them, so I’ll stick to Early Modern plays, food, and photography.

Look, I’m no expert, but I have read hundreds of renaissance dramas aloud the last few years (in the company of actual experts) and neither the “glorious bard’s timeless empathy for migrants” nor the “Shakespeare blesses talentless hacks‘ mediocre work by contributing some verse” takes are accurate.

This seems like an opportune day to mention Beyond Shakespeare's upcoming (April 12 th) exploration of The Book of Sir Thomas More, which is the play *that* speech about immigration comes from.
I’ve read it three times in the last year, and it may not be doing what you think it’s doing.
🎉The show will be an epic deep dive into The Book of Sir Thomas More, with an introduction & a full script-in-hand live audio recording of the text.
🎟️Pre-sales were very healthy, so there really aren't many available - book now to avoid missing out. www.ticketsource.co.uk/beyondshakes...

I see people are getting all excited about 'that' speech from The Booke of Sir Thomas More, the authorship of which - in the context of a VERY complicated collaborative source text - is by no means proven to be by Shakespeare. Despite how desperate generations of Shakespeareans have been to claim it

Infrastructure, baby.
The project for a unified bike lane along the Athens Riviera, triumphantly announced by the PM in 2021, was supposed to have been delivered in 2025. Almost five years on, only some sections are close to completion, and the project is now expected in 2027.

I have said it before and I will say it again. A three generation global moratorium on men running for office or being hired for top jobs would do us a great deal of good.

Utterly baffled to learn that the American film Blackhawk Down (2001) used a Breton-language (France) traditional ballad for their racist, revisionist drama about US soldiers in Somalia.

Have a listen because Denez Prigent and Lisa Gerrard are exquisite here. www.youtube.com/watch?v=VjLX...

“Did they grow up under a rock??”

Yes. And the rock was probably put there on purpose by men who wanted uneducated people to control.

This is why we don’t leave any state or county or town behind. Nobody deserves to grow up under a rock. Especially one they would never have the power to move.

Thinking about how the Second World War was won because every other political alignment agreed to all fight fascism no matter how they felt about each other’s ideologies and wondering if that would have worked if social media had been around at the time.

The only route to accepting Mandelson or Andrew's "silly me!" version of events, is to believe that they only ever exhanged sensitive information or access in exhange for cash or favours or sex to one man, and by sheer dint of bad luck it was the one man on Earth whose emails everyone gets to read.
