I live in Athens now, and I’ve been taking a lot of pictures, relearning my way around the old place.

An old fashioned metal door with bars and a later metal panel added, with an ancient air con unit or filter in the upper left corner and an even more ancient sheet of corrugated metal, probably once a security measure rolled up above it. The door is set in a stone wall next to a plainer wall, either concrete or plastered. The whole thing is painted exactly the same colour, a sort of pale ochre.

Yes, that’s me reflected in the glass, and yes, profile pic notwithstanding, I usually try to avoid capturing my own reflection, but this angle made the best image, so I’m stuck with it, and so are you.

Kypseli: Reflections on cool.

Colour photo. Upturned aluminium chairs on top of tables in a closed bar, the plate glass shopfront, stainless steel bar, and untreated plywood shelving reeking of hip and cool new Athens. This is near the Pedion tou Areos, in Kypseli, a neighbourhood that in the last few years has become increasingly cool and increasingly expensive, with a lot of artisanal and artistic activity, and increasingly, serious gentrification. Reflected in the glass panes are some cars, and a street of typical late 20th century apartment buildings, about 5 storeys tall, with balconies the length of the facade, and sandy pale cloth awnings the same colour as the buildings shading them from the sun.

Just so you know, editors and translators, like writers, have not been highly paid for decades. Many work freelance, by the piece - editorial jobs have been disappearing from publishing houses all century - and the page rate has barely gone up as the cost of living soars.

What matters most, though, is that he is meant to be Very Sexy. His hair is shiny and dark, styled just so. He is wearing ridiculously clean white pants, and his nipples are perfect. They wink at you. The one bare foot you can see is steady on the deck, a foundation for his testosterone, and his arms are offer to hold up the moon for you. He is pulling down on a rope that disappears out of frame; perhaps he has lassoed the clouds and is wrangling them into lines of erotic poetry.

He is not meant to be a sex symbol. He is meant to be a sex embodiment. And it seems likely that he knows it.

Just for clarification: You can in fact get a lot closer to the building, there’s a path and a normal wrought iron fence on the other side of whatever this is. There are also, however, large, scary, and increasingly anachronistic signs forbidding you to take pictures as it’s a military institution.

I never lived in the South. I probably would, though, at least once - and I think they are the sweet ones.

There’s something almost aggressive about the lack of care for infrastructure, public places, and historic buildings in Athens; as though the present has made war on the past and is asserting its dominance in armed occupation over the conquered territory.
