He walks down the plank in the harbor and is accosted by a group of predatory men. "Between the Welcome Wagon and typhoid, Lark foundered." Lark lays sick and bloody in an alley. "He caught the eye of Gutty, the local doctor." Lark recovers on a straw bed on the floor. Beside him is a large, wild- haired woman with a bloody apron smoking a pipe. "She ran the Latin Quarter street gang, the Crickets. Lark joined and worked the brothel." Lark laughing and chatting in the tavern with the Crickets. "A series of traumatic events fractured Lark's mind, creating Rook. Together, they rule as a powerful crime lord, enacting vengeance and playing cat's paw to the aristocracy. They thrive. They won't be a victim again.
