It might also be worth noting that we lost several echidnas in the Pleistocene (Megalibgwilia spp. and Murrayglossus). Some of them might have been worm-feeders, like Zaglossus, but it seems reasonable to suppose that some were probably ant/termite specialists.

Megalibgwilia (extinct genus of echidna) - Oil painting I started a few years ago while working on other images of this animal for the Melbourne Museum. Finished it this year and framed it with red cedar wood offcuts for the #CAVEPS2025 fundraising auction. #palaeoart #megalibgwilia #caveps
