Idk why anyone would want to be famous. Aren’t there already enough occasions for people to read onto you some bizarre not-you? To be pestered by people you’d rather not be? For people to ask you questions about thing that are ntb? Why would anyone want to multiply those by potentially millions?

that reminded me of one thing. there was this russian pro-kremlin-pocket-opposition guy named Zhirinovski (died some years ago), famous for his loud and ridiculous rants about fighting the West on television. i remember him chanting about some seismic weapon russia could potentially use 🤷🏻‍♂️

Straw movie poster Back when Django Unchained came out, it took me a while to get around to it. But when I finally did, it energised the fuck outta me. Yea, it heavily involved slavery in the narrative, but the action, the suspense, and the satisfaction of it's final scenes were all worth being subjected to the horrors of those times for the hundredth time. But when asking my parent to watch it with me later on, they brushed off the film, claiming not to want to watch another slavery movie. I get why they'd say that, as even I can feel a certain deep, bubbling rage when seeing the exploitation of my people being depicted on screen, even if fictional. But I knew that Djago was so much more than just shameless exploitation of black suffering. Straw is purely, exclusively shameless exploitation of black suffering. There are movies like these in which a protagonist snaps after a particularly hard day where everything seems to be working against them. I have a slight difficulty watching such extreme suffering myself, but I can still love movies like these when the protagonists spins the block on everyone who wronged them, as I'm given a sense of catharsis and justice. Straw is not that kind of story. It is struggle porn in the purest sense. The first half hour or so of the game is just nonstop struggles happening to Taraji's character. She gets evicted, loses her job, has her daughter taken from her by the state, has her car seized after being verbally and vehiculally assaulted by a police officer, and she has what meager wages she did have purposely hoarded from her. It was all so hard to watch that I initially turned the movie off after the first few minutes because it just felt fucking awful. I understand there are no shortage of assholes in the world, but to have nearly every person she interacted with that day seemingly only able to spew venom exclusively just seemed so unrealistically crewly that I couldn't imagine any of those people existing in such density. Then the story progresses into an extended hostage situation in which every choice every character made either baffled me or just pissed me the fuck off. Misunderstandings are dragged out for dramatic intensity, but once they are finally tackled by the cast, I couldn't help but wonder why they never came up in the previous few hours. The fact that no one seemed to care about the protagonist until she was finally in a position to threaten violence herself pissed me off too, because I refuse to belive that so few people would give her the benefit of the doubt up to that point. Despite her relative innocence, it takes so much of the runtime for the police and for the hostages to empathise with her, and still, some never come around. It was not only not feasible, but just straight up hard to watch. I've had a simmering beef with Tyler Perry for some years now. Sure, I grew up on his plays and his early films, but in the decade and change since, he has irked me from afar. I fail to understand what credentials he has, outside of the appeal of his early work, to feel justified in writing so many stories from the black female perspective despite not being one and, from the looks of his love life, not having access to any today. But worse than that, he simply does not know how to write engaging drama that doesn't rely on extreme suffering. I don't want him shackled to Madea forever, but if every time he wants to get "serious" he has to resort to the utter hopelessness of the final twist at the end of this movie, then fuck, just write more seasons of Sistas for Christ Sake. Anyone reading this knows that the world is particularly fucked up right now. I believe that the only way to un-fuck it is to imagine a world that isn't built on toxic lies find antisocial world views, and work with each other to help create it. Creativity is something that is absolutely fostered in black communities, and I can see the heights of creativity in books, music, and even other films and TV outside of Tyler's wheelhouse. But I feel Tyler's utter inability to imagine a better world means he only has the capacity to reflect the one we live in now. The thing is, he's been rich long enough and had a rough enough upbringing that it seems the only humanity he can connect to in "regular folk" is their suffering. If it's not the pain of wage slavery and police brutality, then it's the family trauma and relationship turmoil of middle class negros. I don't know if that nigga is capable of conceptualizing a "good day" for someone like me or my family and friends without some impending tragedy. But what's worse is that many people like me, coworkers, and family, will watch a movie like this and sincerely view it as an accurate depiction of reality. They will leave it saying "hey, the world is really like that" but to believe that is to sacrifice one's capacity for compassion. To believe that the world is truly as cruel as it is in this film is the believe there is no reason to have any hope in it, as it will only work to stomp you out. Yes, there are several bad actors in the play of life, but if we are forced to be on stage either way, I feel we must perform as best we can to support the entire cast and crew. If it really is every man for himself, then we will inevitably clash with ourselves instead of those with actual power at the top of our hierarchies. This is a truth I have not always believed, or even been able to articulate, but I feel it is more true now than ever. But a man like Tyler Perry doesn't seem to hold any of those same beliefs. That's okay, though; he's too rich to be one paycheck away from eviction. He's potentially too famous to have an unofficial target placed on his head by a single police officer. He's probably got so many cars that if one ever broke down in the rain, he could just tell his driver to walk home and pick him up in a new one. And he doesn't even have any children to understand the true pain that having them taken from you would cause. But he has no problem putting it down on a page, so it can be put on film and sold back to us not as even a cautionary tale, but as a story so utterly pessimistic and joyless that the most we can say is "well, glad it ain't me". Well, it could be any one of us, but least likely of which could it be the man who committed the scenario to words to begin with. So yea, Straw sucks.

He said the “sad thing” is that the public is somewhere between “doesn’t seem to care or know the difference”. “It’s like they’re being served slop, and they’re getting used to the fact that this is like, oh, I guess this is like f***ing like short rib. And I’m like, it’s not. It’s slop. I think that’s the bigger issue. This film about Prince, to me, it’s a full meal. And it’s not something you can just like tear through. It’s tough at times,” he added. Edelman spent five years directing the project, known as The Book of Prince, a process that was extensively detailed in a major feature in the New York Times. After Netflix axed the project, Edelman compared his project to a scene from an Indiana Jones movie. “The image I’ve had in my head is the last show of Raiders of the Lost Ark, of just a huge warehouse somewhere in Netflix. A crate and just like put away,” he said, adding that viewers won’t ever be able to see it because he doesn’t “feel like getting sued”. He said whatever the Prince estate and Netflix cook up is “not a documentary”. “It’s going to be a hagiographic propaganda love letter to Prince the artist. Are you going to learn anything about Prince? I doubt it. Are you going to learn anything dark about Prince? I doubt it. Are you going to learn anything complicating about Prince? I doubt it,” he added. He called the whole process the most “painful” and “difficult” thing. “Maybe the whole saga has officially concluded and I lost, and this happens to be such a sort of extreme high profile episode in documentary filmmaking,” he said. Edelman said that he wanted to tell the truth about Prince, the “mysterious figure”. “His androgyny and his being able to tap into his female side, his racial ambiguity at times and his message that comes from being, let’s just say, open to all things. By nature of him being 5’2, he looks like the underdog. He is this pixie fairy, purple genius. But the guy never stopped working and really worked in service of the fans. So, he lived as a mystery and he died as a mystery. But the guy, he was a shapeshifter and so he morphed, he changed lives. So, the guy who became a Jehovah’s Witness in the early aughts, and all of a sudden was like under the guidance of Larry Graham. That’s a different dude than the dude who did the Dirty Mind album in 1980 and was singing about head,” he added. One of the suggestions was that the Prince estate didn’t want some of the more troubling episodes of the Purple Rain star’s life exposed to the public. “This isn’t, by the way, like R. Kelly. And like, it’s like we already know what he’s guilty of. And you’re just like exposing sort of really horrid truths and that people need to know because this guy’s got to go down. This isn’t that. But people sort of were defensive in terms of like, as if he were that. The relationship to how much people love Prince. And it’s like, so who wants this? Like, who wants sort of a microscopic, you know, sort of accounting of someone’s life when some of it is going to be a little a little scummy at times. But the whole point of it is the journey. And the whole point of it was actually reflecting a journey that he went through,” he added. He said Prince was emotionally and physically “abusive”, pointing to comments from his protégé Jill Jones. “People had issues with how he treated people. He was emotionally abusive. He was physically abusive in very specific, I’ll say for how it was reported in one instance. The point is like this all weighed on him. And so this sort of dramatic life event, he thought partially he was responsible. But like the way that certain people, maybe the estate is characterizing sort of, oh, the film’s bad or the film’s this, it’s negative. I mean, whatever. It’s a joke. I mean, the whole idea is like, wait, so the estate had, here’s the one thing they’re allowed to do. Check the film for factual inaccuracies. Guess what? They came back with a 17-page document full of editorial issues, not factual issues. Do you think I have any interest in putting on a film that is factually inaccurate?,” he added. Edelman highlighted the irony that Prince was “notoriously [one of the] most famous control freaks in the history of artists”, someone who fought for artistic freedom, as evidenced by his legal battle with Warner Music. “I’m not Prince, but I worked really hard making something, and now my art is being stifled and thrown away,” he said. “This is the thing I just find galling. I mean, I can’t get past this, of the short-sightedness of a group of people whose interest is their own bottom line. They’re afraid of his humanity. The lawyer who runs this estate essentially said he believed that this would do generational harm to Prince. In essence, that the portrayal of Prince in this film, what people learn about him, would deter younger viewers and fans, potentially, from loving Prince. They would be turned off.”

He's the amoral grinning smile of crime, a green-haired psychopath who has murdered thousands of people since he first debuted in 1940, blown up more buildings than Wayne Enterprises can account for, and crowbarred a young hero or two. The Joker is arguably the most famous villain in comic book history, almost the equal of his mortal enemy The Batman when it comes to popularity, and a face recognised around the world. Now, I enjoy a good villain as much as the next person, so that's why I decided to have a look back at his very first appearance in Batman #1, published in 1940 a few months after the "Batman" character debuted in Detective Comics. And it's so interesting to go back. Written by Bill Finger and potentially drawn by Bob Kane, The Joker who appears in Batman #1 has one thing he shares with so many modern-day versions of the character: he isn't actually funny at any point.
