I have had the orange medaka ricefish a while but when I first got them they were timid and hid under the plants 24/7. I filled the other horse trough and though it is in progress now they are “Hi Mom where’s breakfast”.

Whitespot, Javanese Ricefish & Schneider's Bockadam photographed in Rammang Rammang Village #mangrove canals in #Sulawesi. These widespread species, native to both sides of Wallace Line, are also familiar in #Thailand

In the horse trough that I set up bc I had it and didn’t want to spend money on an aquarium when ricefish are viewed from above.
No filter. No heater. I use about a gallon of water every 2 days for the plants and replace with day old tap water.

I have ricefish in a 125 gallon horse trough and have moved a couple for reasons. It isn’t too difficult.

Before they were in the aquarium hobby they were used in scientific research so likely someone knows.
The little ricefish that I fell in love with were research animals too. There is a patented genetic modified line in Japan that are bright pink.

There are over 400 varieties of ricefish so same but different.
They don’t have to have filters or heaters and instead of doing big water changes I water my plants with fish water and refill with day old tap water. So not much work at all.

Something spoke to me when I saw them on YouTube. Since you look at them from above I had more than plenty containers. I had pothos and peace Lilly for nitrogen control and for O2.
So what I have actually bought is 24 Pearl Galaxy ricefish, 4 orange ricefish, pack of 20 neocaradina shrimp,
December 7, 2025 at 7:20 AM
They are medaka ricefish, strain is Pearl Galaxy.

AAAAAA I love medaka ricefish, I have four in a little whiskey barrel pond on my balcony (wish I had more)
December 6, 2025 at 4:02 PM
I wanted the fish in more water bc things are more stable in more water but didn’t want to buy an aquarium. I had already more horse watering troughs than I needed so I have been working on making this attractive, getting plants going and getting the water stable. I added the Pearl ricefish today.

The first ones that I got 24 of are confident and happy and nearly their adult size. I am having a lot of shrimp mortality. As they are in the same container as the above fish I don’t know what that is about.
I bought 3 orange ricefish that arrived Wednesday and they are freaked out, maybe bc there

The little shrimp do housekeeping in the container which I will need because I fell in love and want this many ricefish.

Medaka or ricefish - bred to be looked at from above, no pumps or filters if plants in the tank, tolerate temperatures from 32 F to 100+ F, fresh to brackish water, pH 6.4 to 8.0. Wide range of colors.
November 12, 2025 at 9:21 PM
shimb and bonus background runt medaka who was getting bullied in the main tank

when i woke up my little ricefish was swimming against the glass in my direction......hes like a dog
September 28, 2025 at 5:59 PM
@phrost.bsky.social the local shop has the shrimp and the ricefish. Gonna get a small school and let them settle into the tank with some plants. Then I might get a beta later on
September 4, 2025 at 1:01 AM
Dosed the tank up with swim bladder treatment as one of the medaka is not doing so well. I don't have a spare hospital tank or pump right now so have decided to do the whole tank. The white one is Fat Betty, sole survivor of my 1st lot of fish. SB treatment is super green! Also an oto on the glass 🥰
