Over the years my parents, aunts and uncles needed care and got it at Houlton, Sebasticook, Redington-Fairview, and Maine General. Also in Waterville, already closed, and at the VA in Togus, sadly diminished. They had the comfort of knowing their providers and being close to home. This is terrible

"In the town of Clinton (now Benton) on the Sebasticook River, a dam was built in 1809, 12 ft high with no fishway. It stood for 5 or 6 years and had so impoverished the fisheries that the selectmen cut it away and allowed the fish to ascend to their breeding grounds. in 1814 the town obtained authorization to control the fisheries and the 1st year after cutting away this dam, the fishery was leased to one James Ford, who agreed to pay yearly 200 fish to each man, woman, and child in Clinton, and to sell as many more as he wanted at a fixed price. From this time the fishery increased rapidly and the town began to sell the fishery yearly at public auction. The price varied from $500-$1500; the purchaser being bound to distribute gratis to the poor and to sell to all the townspeople at a fixed price. The year of the closing of the Augusta Dam the fishery sold for $225. 1 or 2 years before it had sold for $500." Sturgeon were reported seen by 3 different persons ruing[sic] the past summer. Their presence in the river was not considered unusual. According to one report, certain local residents claim to be able to get sturgeon any time they want them by dynamiting the deep holes of the river. An alewife run exists in the Eastern River and was reported to be unusually noticeable in the spring of 1950, although apparently no attempt was made to catch any, such attempts requiring suitable seines or weirs. One resident of the lower river, a Mr. Mayers, reported that thousands of alewives were killed in May 1950, when piling was dynamited at the old lower bridge to clear the channel for navigation.

I grew up on Sebasticook Lake, which was eutrophic because of too much phosphorous (a past potato chip plant, plus agriculture, plus poor sewage treatment). I also was on a well and a septic tank. I learned water conservation through knowing the lake's water quality was afftected by septic tanks.
