Men raised in Washington brick mansions with ancestral portraits watching. Men whose families had roots plunged deep into Massachusetts granite and who carried that history like a hereditary burden. Mateo was one of those. A man of lineage and prophecy and ruin. He was Director of Health and Human Services then, overseeing the nation’s great frailties. A post that demanded faith in medicine, in science, in the silent elegance of the microscopic world. But he had none. He told me once—quietly, as though confessing a sin to a stranger in a train station—that he didn’t believe in vaccines. Said they were “meddling.” Said the body should be left to its wars. He spoke like a man who trusted only what could be torn from the earth with bare hands. A medieval soul in a modern suit. I remember thinking: How the hell did you get this job? But in Washington the truth is a poor competitor against lineage. And California, where he lived now, had welcomed him like a prodigal saint. I followed him for months. Watched him give speeches about health while sidestepping the word immunization as if it were an old enemy. In the end I did neither. His wife Aurora Vega—the actress with the face of a woman carved from sunlit stone—returned from her film set once the rumors reached her. When she arrived at a gala where he was scheduled to speak, the photographers captured them together. Her hand on his arm. His eyes set forward like a man trying not to meet the gaze of the person who loved him most. I wasn’t there for the argument that followed, but I imagine it shook the gilded walls of their home. She believed in medicine. Trusted experts. Trusted the long, slow machinery of science. And she loved him, which made it all worse. The end of it came near Big Sur, where the cliffs drop clean into the Pacific like the edge of the known world. He asked me to meet him at dusk. Then he walked into the fog until the world took him. I waited until the stars appeared faint and cold above the sea. Until the wind chilled me through my coat. Until I could no longer tell where the cliff ended and the night began. He never returned. Aurora vanished into her work. The Department issued its sterile statements. Washington buried him quietly, the way families with too much history bury their failures. And sometimes—driving the long, lonely highways of California—I see shapes on the shoulder. Broken bodies. Small casualties of speed and steel. I do not stop. But I always wonder: Is he out there still? Following the hunger, or fleeing it?

I spent a little while trying to see how many triangles I could coax out of this scene. A bit of a meditation on abstraction.

The image shows a brownish landscape with peculiar shapes and a kind of eye in the centre of the image. The peculiar shapes are the borders of flat soft sediments capped with a layer of harder rock which resists erosion. The soft layers can get eroded sideways and this causes flat plains and isolated hills with steep borders. Images like these often provide an optical illusion. The dark lines in the image are the steep borders which are in shadow. The sunlight comes from the right and the mesas are elevated over the surrounding terrain. Often however the brain sees a reverse relief and lets the mesa look like pits or depressions in stead of mounds and elevated ground.

The humble Wood Pigeon: underrated beauty in ubiquity.

Photo of a wood pigeon flying above a river. The pigeon is captured wings aloft, and tail fanned out. It is clearly moving quite fast. The pigeon’s subtle greyish, pinkish hues stand out. Behind the bird, out of focus, is a tidal river, with its muddy edge (for it is low tide) forming a dark band across the bottom of the photo. The river itself makes for a nondescript and grey background. Against this background, the image has the opening two lines of a poem called, The Sound of Pigeons in Flight by B. Odgerel. Here is the full poem: The sound of pigeons in flight
is the everyday beauty of the sky.
Like something which the wind has received,
the birds’ bright shapes are alive upon the wind.
Wheeling round, they come to earth,
better than amazement at a silent death,
and a mind of love and prayer is born.
I have seen no doubt in birds’ bodies.
The eyes of humans, alive as the birds, are bright.
A word wound, like an arrow wound, in their breasts.
