Connecting home solar and electric vehicle batteries to the grid could boost South Africa’s clean energy and strengthen the electricity system
South African homes need two-way meters so that they can feed extra solar power from home systems and electric vehicles back to the grid.

@mrundkvist That's a suggestive question. You're hiding your assumptions in the question.

- »renewables« includes the very useful (especially in Sweden) hydro power, but is implied to mostly mean solar/wind, which are much less useful
- If there is a competition, it's between nuclear energy on […]

We took it for granted, but the amount of energy and costs needed to get that fuel useable and transported is extremely inefficient compared to solar>battery
February 9, 2026 at 8:25 AM
from a quick research, a 7Kw Petrol generator needs approx. 3.2 tons of mined material. before it even makes a single Kw of energy. - no fuel..

the same material mining cost would build approx. 8Kw of solar panels (less inverters) and will start making energy pretty much immediately.

A quick addition: it seems to me that in the current international climate, building more 'in-house' power (solar, wind, etc) would give NZ greater independence. That energy independence could prove quite valuable down the road.

Solar/battery would foster the energy resilience and independence of everyday NZ'ers. It would alleviate the existing energy grid. It is our hard-earned tax dollars they are spending - we deserve a fair slice of the cake and decisions that benefit more than a few.

I had a hunch you were channeling some of the spirit of Universe of Energy into the solar video.

Pour one out for rides and experiences that tried to help guide us all to future hopes while being entertaining.

I miss those rides, and I miss the messages the park tried to convey even more.

YES to thousands of solar jobs

YES to $1,000 off residential power bills.

NO ENERGY TAX.

NO LNG FROM TRUMP

Luxon isn't running the country. Big oil and it's money is.

KICK THEM OUT.

Put solar panels on state houses. You could probably do the lot for $1.5b, would reduce energy costs for those least able to afford it, increase our grid resilience and save about the same amount in energy costs overall.

Imported LNG?

Why, oh why, are we under the thumb of absolute #fossilfools?

We could have energy independence with cheap offshore wind and solar power. We could phase out fossil fuels and transition to a carbon free economy.

But not with these crapitalist bootlickers in charge.

This is tying […]

What’s that then? Nuclear, tidal, solar, on shore wind, off shore wind, imported energy? Who is doing it? When? Changes to planning legislation, changes to infrastructure, training for the skills required? The ball has a long way to roll. Pictures with dogs is a great start.

The current government could be launched into the sun. That would give us .0000000000000000000000000000000001 of a second of solar energy that we could be capturing with solar.

At least they would be useful for something...

If you are talking about increasing the cost of electricity, and not investing in distributed, resilient solar and battery capacity, nor electrification of transport in multi modes, you don’t understand the problem and should not be anywhere near power (pun absofuckinglutely intended)
