We've had niches where AI had real cost benefit since the 1980s -- I've designed and led teams on some such systems myself -- but they're rare and they're point solutions, not cheaply generalisable.

Today's #stochasticparrots offer no cost benefit, except in domains where accuracy truly does […]

@quixoticgeek we certainly do, but once you are generating enough clean energy to power all farm equipment, all transport, and all mineral processing, then will be a good time to think about whether you have enough energy left over for #stochasticparrots and #ai slop production.

As to not […]

This was basically the thesis of #stochasticparrots: the problem isn’t the technology, it’s us, we’re the problem

I enjoy movies, which are the collaborative work of a lot of humans using technology to create a composite work. The directors eye filters what we see, so much footage is dropped. They then push the actors toward their vision.

It's not wrong to call LLMs soul less algorithms, #StochasticParrots.

It's hard to know who to be sorrier for. The 9,000 who are losing their jobs, or the rest who are going to have to take on not only the additional work of clearing up the mess the AI makes, but also the work of their dismissed colleagues.

Very clarifying article about stochastic parrots and the problem of fulfilling capital expectations at any cost.

The infestation of generative systems in education, medicine and academia should all be cause for much, much more alarm.

What if all the hype and hysteria around artificial intelligence is really just about resuscitating a moribund neoliberalism, which pretty much gave up the ghost in 2008? 🤔

Of all the effed up ways of adopting "AI" technologies, mimicking a dead person strike me as one of the creepiest use cases.
Are we ever going to stop deluding ourselves that we're interacting with intelligent, caring entities?

@emilymbender.bsky.social warned against using LLMs as band-aids in critical systems:

“Education, healthcare, legal, immigration… synthetic text looks like a quick solution. But it’s actually worse than nothing.”

The new OpenAI creative writing bot's "short story" has the phrase "democracy of ghosts". It's the sort of phrase that would make me stop and admire it, if I were reading a human author - which, it turns out, I was, because it's from Nabokov's 1957 novel "Pnin".

I remember a lightning talk ~2 years ago with a series of experiments showing AI couldn't tell the difference between true and false statements.

It led me to change my exam quesitons from multiple choice to T/F...
