My less-than-impressive first crop of sweetcorn from the allotment 🙂 Only just over half the cob fertilised, but I'm not too surprised as only six plants made it past the slugs to flowering. Somewhat anaemic looking too, but they tasted okay👍 #Sweetcorn | #Allotments #VegGardening | #Kent #England

Dave (One of the allotment holders who I've been helping out this season) allowed me the pleasure of digging up the two surviving potato plants he sowed late this spring. I wasn't sure that planting them shallow, and mulching with chipped bark, would prove very successful 🙂, but I was pleasantly surprised for him. Apart from the ones that grew too near the surface and went partially green (Bottom pile. Still mostly usable if he cuts away the affected bits, I think) the rest (Top pile) made a decent enough crop, I thought 👍 I forgot to add the spuds to the take-home pic 🙄🙂 which shows pretty much the last of this year's harvest, I reckon (Apart, that is, from the sweetcorn which I hope to pick sometime this coming week 🤞🌽 Nb. Take a close look at the odd shaped tom! 😁 Well, that's half an hour of my life I can't get back! I decided to add googly eyes to the two spuds I placed as 'eyes' above that strangely shaped tomato 🥔👀🍅😁 The large pond at the allotments doesn't look half as nice on a cloudy day 🙂 The water also looked worryingly murky, and there were no signs of the fish 😞

A selection of home-grown veg on the top of a galvanized metal storage box, with a fancy pair of secateurs (my neighbour's) for size comparison. The 'patty pan' squash prior to harvesting. I sowed them indoors on the 19th April. How the runner beans looked before picking. It was over a week since I visited the allotment, and there were plenty needing harvesting from the half a dozen, or so, plants 🙂 The sweetcorn are flowering! Somewhat less than impressive in size, I'm still hoping for a half dozen to reach maturity 🤞 The cucurbits are looking very tired now, but they've given a fair crop, so no complaints from me! 👍😁

One of the few surviving 'Candela Di Fuoco' radishes that I sowed on the 14/06/25, put on a growth spurt with all the rain we've had over the last few days, so I decided it was time for harvesting. #Radishes #AllotmentGardening #Allotments #VegGardening #Gardening #Homegrown #Kent #England
The one radish that I harvested today 🙂 It's an Italian heirloom variety called 'Candle of Fire' in English, so the long, tapering shape is right. It's pictured alongside a hand trowel, and is roughly the same size. It has a satisfying deep red colour. It was very hot to the taste, so it lived up to its name! 🕯️🔥 How it looked before harvesting. I suspect now that they are all meant to reach this size, so I'm not expecting much from the remaining ones! 😂

First crop of runner beans from seeds saved from last year. They're about a secateur's length long 🙂 One of the two gherkins I picked today. At around 6 cm long, it's about the right length, I reckon. The other was twice its size and misshaped (very not photogenic!) 😁 The 'Marmande' beefsteak tomatoes that I sowed on the 2nd of April. Looking promising, I think! 👍 My friend's cordless brush cutter made easy work of the grass paths! Unfortunately, in my eagerness to get going, I forgot to take a 'before' photo 🙄🙂

The snow peas on the new trellises had their first blooms today. Yesterday I planted our tomato, cucumber and custard squash seedlings with fennel and oregano companions. I’ll wait till June to set put basil, eggplant, and beans.

The unnamed runners that I sowed on the 7th March (easily a month too early) are doing well. I ran out of compost yesterday, so wasn't able to pot them on as hoped. They'll be enormous before I'm able to give them to my friends to plant out! 🙄😁 #VegGardening #GardeningUK #UKGardening #Gardening

Yesterday I took down the first tray of seedlings to my friend's house for him to put in his outdoor (hopefully frost free) grow house. The lettuces should be fine, but I'm a little worried for the toms. Lots more to come though! 🤞 #AllotmentGardening #VegGardening #GardeningUK #Gardening
