#LeeKonitz and #WarneMarsh were legendary for both their contrapuntal interplay and also their rapid unison play, often a minor 3rd apart. In the mid- to late-1990s, their music attracted the critical acclaim it deserved. Their soaring flights of interplay are seen as distinctive.

Among the most influential pieces of music I’ve ever heard. It remains as fresh today as it was back in 1950.

‘Marshmallow’, a typically throwaway name. Based on the harmonic changes of Ray Noble’s ‘Cherokee, Indian Love Song’. #jazz #Jazzsky #LeeKonitz #WarneMarsh

#WarneMarsh leads his ‘students’ in a reprise of a tune he and Lee Konitz wrote back in 1949. Sax of a Kind was first released on Capitol Records by the #LennieTristano sextet. The complex linear construction is only stated at the close.

To wow club audiences Tristano would send #Konitz and #WarneMarsh (alto and tenor) to play #Bach Two Part Inventions. Played straight. No frills. The applause was rapturous. Lennie would take risks there after. Among the great examples of this is Lennie’s Quintet at the Half Note in 1964. #Jazzsky

Please excuse the ludicrous cover and the misspelling of his name. Pathetic form iTunes. This is #WarneMarsh playing a head he cowrote with Lee Konitz. Here he plays with some superb Scandinavian students. The original dates back to 1949, Lennie Tristano Sextet.

Marshmallow, 1949. #LeeKonitz and #WarneMarsh. A characteristically Bach-like, serpentine line, based on the delightful evergreen by Ray Noble, ‘Cherokee: Indian Love Song’. I first heard this before teenage. It haunts and delights ever since in equal measure.

#Jazz The inimitable #LeeKonitz, who teamed up with so many fine horn players (famously #WarneMarsh) & pianists (eg. #SalMosca, #HaroldDanko, #FrankWunsch, #DanTepfer) usually soloed first. He was worried that if someone played so well he’d have nothing to add & would rather they had the last word.

#LesterYoung (‘Prez’ or the President) & #ColemanHawkins each determined their own lineage. Hawk, the rabble rouser, led to Coltrane. #Prez, #BillieHoliday’s saxophonist of choice, led to the more lyrical diatonic styles of #WarneMarsh & #StanGetz, also the densely chromatic #LeeKonitz. #Jazz

It’s an extraordinary coincidence that I found at East Slope bar, Sussex University, one Sunday morning, guitarist Dave Cliff who’d toured with the legends #LeeKonitz & #WarneMarsh, who’d toured Europe, 1975-76. The tour, via #JazzExchange, was historic for many reasons. The two didn’t record again.

#Improvisation at its peak. The telepathic exchange between #LeeKonitz, alto sax, and #WarneMarsh, tenor. #jazz Based on the evergreen ‘I’ll Remember April. I was taught (sax) by the guitarist Dave Cliff’s associate.

Today is the anniversary of some great Konitz/Marsh/Tristano recordings from 1949. Here’s “Lennies Pennies” from the Centennial Quartet, featuring two of Tristano’s former students. #lennietristano #jazz #jazzsky #holisticbassist #livemusic #leekonitz #warnemarsh #bassist
