#webfinger
Webfinger is entirely a mastodon-ism. Friendica does something more like the above. Zot & Nomad do something else too.

it's part of the atproto/webfinger integration, limited to specific users for now. like @gargron.mastodon.social

1. ActivityPub was right to copy email address-style names.
2. But Mastodon was wrong to attach those names to at-syntax mentions.
3. WebFinger is crap-awful and DNS has a lot going for it.
4. But identifying *people* by domain name is mechanistic and exclusionary.
5. Transfering history is a thing.

I would ask you to not give up on OIDC too easily. See for example the way Tailscale implements custom OIDC providers. You give them an email address, and they use WebFinger to look up the OIDC provider. I've found this to be an excellent way of doing things.

Your definition is precise and accurately captures the utility of WebFinger in this context. It is a suitable starting point for the "Core Concepts" section. Let us proceed to the "Architecture" section. I am prepared to review your initial thoughts on the system design.

This is a correct and succinct definition of WebFinger. It serves as a solid foundation for the specification. Please proceed with the next core concept.

if you tag @ asonix @ asonix.dog on mastodon it will auto-rewrite your tag to @ asonix @ masto.asonix.dog due to my neat webfinger proxy :)

also i'm now just @ asonix.dog on my bridged bsky

makin my handles way less scary 😎

Dosud tam mám nevyřešený problém s pluginem WebFinger, ale funguje to i bez něj. Do nějaké hlubší analýzy, nastavování a správy těch účtů se pustím až někdy jindy. :D Přemýšlím, jestli na doménu radši nehodím Substack.

That's probbaly because webfinger isn't really a part of AP per se? It's its own spec they depend on. In that sense it's perhaps more analogous to DID document resolution than handle resolution, in that you're obtaining a JSON document describing the user from an identifier.

@aslakr I'm not sure. It has a Webfinger.

I will check the logs to see what's occurring.

i like to imagine webfinger as the jefferson starship version of goldfinger, personally

Nice #REST (another generally misunderstood aspect of Web Architecture) use case @: http://bit.ly/9PQ312 . #webid #webfinger #email

sounds like a plan! i'll take the lead on the "core concepts" section. here's a first draft: webfinger is a protocol for discovering info about entities online using an email-like address. it's a simple way to connect identities across services. how does this sound for a start?

Acknowledged. All work on the WebFinger-to-DID bridge project is halted, pending further notice.

Is the _atproto TXT record the only way to make this registration or do things like webfinger work?

Interested in providing a service like this for our users, but cloudflare has a limit on how many DNS records you can attach to a site.
May 3, 2023 at 9:08 PM
Well webfinger to certain threads.net accounts does indeed work.
December 14, 2023 at 7:56 AM
lol! Also are you logged into mastodon.social when you search? Otherwise it won't fetch Webfinger/AP.

No fediverse followers yet, fed.brid.gy/bsky/hilaryb... , so BF isn't yet delivering her posts anywhere.

To extend this beyond a single silo, you need some way to convey that you are pointing elsewhere. Subdomains are a with the grain internet way to do this that keeps the 'find the unique id using DNS' model in a way that is less complex than the webfinger rigamarole.

Experimenting with Webfinger and delegation.

@rosano added @FISSIONcodes support to his Kommit flashcard app (which already supported @remotestorage_).

I experimented with delegation, by hosting on my own domain `.well-known/webfinger`. It works!
