They're called killer whales because they were originally called whale killers. Some subspecies/ecotype hunt and eat whales, dolphins, and porpoises. But the whales in this news story are northern residents, which eat only fish. Almost exclusively Chinook.

Spying on the whale party to try to understand and protect them better is a good thing. They're a critically endangered species. Their main source of food is Chinook salmon, just so you know when you go to Costco.

And from the linked article:

"But government agencies won’t act on this unless they hear from you.

You can help. Send a letter to Fisheries and Oceans Canada by October 31 urging them to establish a whale-safe window for both endangered Chinook and endangered killer whales."

Thanks for posting.

For my artwork that will be done next week, I want to talk about the science behind it -
Two keystone species in the Pacific Northwest is the Orca and the Salmon. Specifically, the Southern Resident Killer Whale (endangered) and the Chinook salmon. It lives between central CA and south Alaska.

Why are Chinook fisheries and recreational fishing still legal? Chinook salmon are declining- they are the main food source for southern resident killer whales. It’s one of the main reasons the whale population is critically endangered and could become extinct.

“We have an endangered killer whale trying to eat an endangered salmon species”

The stakes are high. The Southern Resident orcas that frequent the Salish Sea are endangered, with a population hovering around 75; The Chinook salmon dropped 60% population since '84.

This is why Portland voted to name a bridge after that whale that killed its trainer.

The city said it was just the Chinook word for friends, but we all know why we voted for it.

New collaborative research out today with @raincoast.org explores the deep-roots of conflict over killer whale and Chinook management in the Salish Sea - proposing new approaches to transform intractable conflicts.

Conflicts over ecosystem management - like those roiling over Southern Resident killer whale protection measures and Chinook fishing in the Salish Sea - are too often oversimplified and mismanaged.

Going with a local hero: Southern Resident Killer Whale! Only about 70 of them left in the Pacific Northwest, mainly due to their preferred diet being Chinook salmon. Pollution (including noise), are also factors. They are culturally iconic, and spiritually important to PNW Indigenous peoples.

For years, we've said that Southern resident #orca had low population numbers because they weren't getting enough food to breed. If true, it's not a shortage of Chinook salmon; they probably have more salmon than northern pods
