When we say that many Americans have a 6th grade reading level this is what that means. At a 6th grade level you can read most texts and absorb their surface level meaning, but it’s not until an 8th grade level where you grasp things like subtext, metaphor, and ulterior motives.

A huge amount of critics cannot engage with writing more complex than YA Lit, do not even understand the meaning of subtext, and are unable to comprehend that there can be main characters that are intentionally unrelatable, unappealing, and morally bad.

Johnny Cash already got his due in the late 90’s early 2000’s when he had a whole second wave of his music career. He put out several more albums as an old man after a long hiatus and that’s honestly where a lot of the songs people know him for come from.
