A huge amount of critics cannot engage with writing more complex than YA Lit, do not even understand the meaning of subtext, and are unable to comprehend that there can be main characters that are intentionally unrelatable, unappealing, and morally bad.

When we say that many Americans have a 6th grade reading level this is what that means. At a 6th grade level you can read most texts and absorb their surface level meaning, but it’s not until an 8th grade level where you grasp things like subtext, metaphor, and ulterior motives.

Based on what I've heard at the Otay Mesa camp in San Diego, they're punished with additional work duties, aren't allowed outside in the yard, and denied phone access.

My guess is that the goal here is not only to punish the children for turning more people against ICE/DHS, but also to make news outlets think twice about reporting on kids' suffering at the hands of ICE/DHS, out of concern that doing so might lead to retaliation against the kids.
ProPublica published children's letters and drawings documenting their sadness and suffering at Dilley. And Dilley staff are now retaliating by confiscating kids' letters and drawings.

even political commentators that i quite like fall into this trap all the time. they barely ever counter bigoted narratives about us in favor of ignoring them or saying it's weird to care about trans ppl. feels like this started happening a lot during the biden years and it's really not a good trend
