“Mm.” He scratched something down on the page, impassively leafing through his notes as if trying to exhume some reminder he had buried for himself. “And how have you held up thus far? Spending all day in the cold. You don’t even sleep inside the carriage.” Penance blinked, hit a second time by bafflement. “What does it matter?” “If you lose your fingers to frostbite, it will be skin off my bones that stitches you back together.” “My fingers are fine. I don’t sleep in the carriage because I must keep watch.” “Keep watch,” Crow repeated flatly. “I’m sure it’s been eventful. With the recent branches in the road, there’s been hardly any other travelers.” “I am not watching for other travelers.” That made him pause. He shut his tome with a thoughtful hum. “Let Yaotl do it. She sleeps all day and paces all night in my head. She could use some directive.” “Would she know the presence of devils?” Penance asked warily. “I’m sure she would sense them. She has a nose for these things.” “Why do you care if I sleep or not?” Crow made an irritated sound, just heard over the quiet crackle of flames between them. “I’ve already made my motive clear: self preservation. Your exhaustion will only result in sloppiness— driving us into a ditch, or failing to react in time to an ambush.” Shame rose warm in Penance’s face. Had he really seemed so exhausted that his companions doubted his ability to protect them? “There isn’t room in the carriage.” “You suppose they outfitted us a carriage for the holy pilgrimage— rather famously, a three-legged affair— that fit only two?” Penance glared back at his jeering smile. Finally, he yielded with a sigh.

The priest nodded again, eyes fixed forward. Crow considered him as they passed under the light of another street lamp. Perhaps it was only the veil, but contributing to his odd air was the sense that he did not like to be looked at. He carried a tension in his entire body, like an animal coiled and ready to spring, that was discomforting at the least. Crow couldn’t imagine this man doing all of the things Brides were known for— confessions, counseling, caretaking, all that drivel— but he could definitely see him exorcising devils, well-hewn as he was. Priest - handsome. Crow hid a derisive laugh behind his hand. Tasteless, he shot back at Yaotl, then conceded, but he is useful. Just as he could see from her eyes, so too could she from his.
