This whiptail gulper eel (Saccopharynx lavenbergi) was spotted 880 meters deep in Monterey Canyon back in 1993—one of only 18 sightings in nearly 40 years! 📹️😍 With its massive mouth and glowing tail, this deep-sea icon even inspired MBARI’s logo. Watch here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=3nwD...

Jack Scheinman, who took that photo, reported the sighting through our Otter Spotter web portal back in 2022.

Here are a couple of other photos he submitted along with his sighting report.

Peer review does have a problem. Predatory journals metastisized, open access turned out to be a way to charge authors beaucoup 💰, no one has time, credibility is 📉.

Interesting concept in the new journal below. Essentially reviewers blindly collaborate on a shared document before decision.

It's true: Academic publishing has become a racket.

But I think the idea that #peerreview can happen haphazardly in the comments of a preprint server is naive.

Research by my former PhD student, Daniel Gschwentner, on how grassland wildfires impact lakes is now live in Ecosystems: doi.org/10.1007/s100...
Wildfires are contributing to P loading in lakes, but lakes are N-limited so that P is likely not being processed by algae.

The great British ecologist Charles Elton wrote in a gov't report in 1937:

"The earth is a unique natural park of life, whirling through an otherwise lifeless space. In this natural park are over a million forms of life, evolved into an unstable and highly complex network of communities." [1/2🧵]

Check out this beautiful Rough Green Snake we came across in our yard this morning. These #snakes eat insects and are impacted by pesticide applications that are probably killing off their food. Super camo in the grass and trees. Cool. 💚🐍
