My pet gar that I donated to Shedd Aquarium would recognize me and swim over to say hi when I visited her exhibit ❤️🐠

A rare hybrid gar, I raised her since she was 2 inches long, and had to re-home her when I moved to Chicago. I was happy I could visit her in her new home!

TO BE CONTINUED…

A textbook image I did a few years ago showing a trap-jaw ant (Odontomachus rixosus) with her mandibles held open and trigger hairs forward, and then in the closed position.

The snapping shut of the trap is one of the fastest measured animal movements.
A split-screen image showing (top) a face view of an elongated ant standing on a reflective surfave, facing us with toothy brown jaws held 180 degrees open, and (bottom), the same ant with jaws closed, the bluntly toothed tips held together.

I spent a couple hours last night in a white sucker consume talking to families about how they're not a "trash fish." Here's a quick sketch of a chonk for #SundayFishSketch

Holy crap, awesome! Native fishes were my gateway drug to learning about ecosystems in general. Good outreach

Haha yes! Will def need to do so when I come back. Apparently even at the bottom of the mountain they got 8-12” of snow in last 24 hours, so locals were telling me significant portion is closed.

I’d LOVE to visit there but am not in town for long. Will do so next time for sure!

An alligator gar (fish) skull sits on a table in a podcast recording studio, appears to be participating in the production. A fish scientist takes a selfie in front of the MeatEater logo at the company’s headquarters.

I’m in Bozeman, Montana, to talk native fish conservation with the MeatEater folks!
Looking forward to sharing and learning about diverse perspectives regarding stewardship of our natural resources!

For #SundayFishSketch this week, an in-progress Coregonus kiyi. I’m working on an activity for the general public on why we use genetics to distinguish between species, and my current study system of ciscoes is more than a little notorious for being hard to morphologically ID reliably
Pen drawing of a Coregonus kiyi. This thing has HUGE eyes

Screenshot of an announcement about a garden website, but text got cut off so it looks like it’s about “gar”.

Have you ever seen a baby gar eating?

This little Spotted Gar is about a week old and has started feeding on zooplankton (in this case brine shrimp/Artemia/ aka "sea monkeys").

BABBY FISHIES!

Gars just hella cool in general, and apparently really stinkin' cute when they're babies 😍
