How about we could shine the spotlight of a study of 2.4 million children on the issue instead?

Victoria Paterson and I are abseiling off a building here at the University of Glasgow to raise money for student expeds. This is to help disadvanaged students take up these amazing, life changing opportunities @uofglasgow.bsky.social

don't you miss all those fun "stakeholder" discussions from Twitter though? The debate, the abuse, the writing to my principal to complain?

All thanks to decades of reports from volunteers and the public!

I've really enjoyed the High Republic. Amazing to get so invested in a Star Wars story without the Skywalkers and Sith (well maybe Sith....). More big, joined up stories please. What's next?

I found this article on neurodiversity in conservationists very moving and encouraging, for professional and personal reasons.

We've got more to do to do on ethnic diversity, and inclusion of people from more disadvantged backgrounds, but this is a good story
‘Intrinsically connected’: how human neurodiversity could help save nature
Biodiversity is linked to people’s diversity, and nature lends itself to people who are different, says author Joe Harkness

We have a 12 month Marine and Freshwater teaching position in our School. www.jobs.gla.ac.uk/job/lecturer... Closing date 11th August.

Interest in teaching on our Tropical Marine Biology course, would be great, but not essential. @sbohvm.gla.ac.uk

Questions to @jlindstrom.bsky.social
davemarinebio.glasgow.ac.uk
It is the cleaner fish fishery yes. Wrasse are totally overlooked here despite their ecological importance, and the fishery for them has been very badly run. Protection in MPAs is a step forward, but there’s still more to do on the wider fishery.
davemarinebio.glasgow.ac.uk
An important development is that these fish have been recognised as “typical species” of protected features. There are a lot of other species and places which can benefit from this approach. More to come on this.
davemarinebio.glasgow.ac.uk
And to our relatively new “regulator of regulators” Environmental Standards Scotland, who picked this up and required action from Government. It has all taken too long, but progress has happened.
davemarinebio.glasgow.ac.uk
Some good conservation news. The Scottish Government has closed >20 MPAs to wrasse fishing. This is a direct result of our team’s research and the tireless efforts of @siftscotland.bsky.social

Bottom trawling continues to destroy vulnerable marine ecosystems.

95+ scientists have signed a letter calling on States & @UN to fully implement existing commitments to protect seamounts from destructive fishing practices.

I don't know how many times I've registered for Elsevier's Editorial Manager system, or linked my Orcid to it, it has never worked properly.

Maybe they could spend part of their billion dollars of profit on fixing it.

I know, not the biggest problem in the world today

🌿Last week, MASTS held a 2day workshop with @scotlandbnz.bsky.social‬ on Coastal and Marine Natural Capital Markets. Participants explored how Scotland’s coastal and marine science community can provide evidence to assess the feasibility, risks, and opportunities of natural capital markets.

Should probably spray dye over the catch too, as they’ll chuck it overboard or it’ll get buried in the hold
davemarinebio.glasgow.ac.uk
it does say "fuel use in fisheries" as one of the contributors.
