It's official! Check out the new International Center for Decentralization and Governance, an interdisciplinary initiative for the study of decentralization, governance, and federalism. Wish I could attend the conference on Asymmetric Decentralization in Santiago de Compostela in early November...

Got two peer review invitations from the same journal within 18 minutes — for two different papers. Either I’m in demand, or someone hit 'send' a bit too fast. 😅

So, decentralization ≠ bureaucracy — it could be a path to better well-being.
Happier countries aren't just richer — they often govern closer to the people.
Gràcies to the amazing team: Cristina, Núria, and Maite 😉

Why transfers over taxes?
Because when citizens don’t feel the cost directly, the benefits of local services shine through more clearly. Call it fiscal illusion — and yes, it’s real.

Answer: Yes — but it depends on how it’s funded.
Subcentral governments that spend more tend to boost happiness, especially when that spending is financed by transfers, not local taxes.

Most research on happiness focuses on wealthy Western countries. We went global 🌍
