And lastly for now, Clement Attlee could have heard the first week of Radio 1.

Sending get well wishes, incidentally, to genuine literacy champion and all-round good egg Dolly.

I think I probably learned more about the world from TV than from school. Which is not to damn school.

Life's hard enough. Celebrate imagination rather than outright lying.

How useful/profitable I am to society is a moot point, but I'm not sure that the Bannonesque political discourse of the 'flood it with shit' is terribly useful either, and it certainly isn't very interesting.

I think deep down some of the grifters we have know this, but it's useful to them to peddle the lie that we all have to do the same thing, and be the same person.

When I was writing the new book - because tbh, the 80s was a hard decade for me at times - I kept coming back to the inescapable truth that what kept me going was: books, TV, comedy, radio, films sometimes, but above all music. That stuff's not frippery, it's how you become the person you are.

‘Into the Groove’ by @whenisbirths.bsky.social is full of fascinating 80s pop facts. But one fact you won’t find in there is the truth about Justin’s ‘cameo’ in Elton John’s ‘Nikita’ video - luckily he told us all about it!

Newspaper editors who will all fall behind this 'what's the point of humanities degrees' bunkum when that's exactly what most of them studied in the first place.
whenisbirths.bsky.social
Not to overdramatise it, but especially missing the gone people today. A couple are recent, others are from ages back, but you still miss 'em. That's it. Send.

How do people think musicians and so on get better? Yes, it’s practice but it’s other things too.

All reminds me of how hostile the media used to get about media studies. ‘It’s just watching telly and reading newspapers’ (and also ‘potentially working out what we’re really up to’).

So, the plan is to cut English, the arts, and sociology - the degrees that actually study culture - while on another part of your platform claiming to “defend” British culture.

It’s performance nationalism with a reading age of seven.
Badenoch: Curb students taking 'rip-off' degrees such as English
The performing arts, sociology and anthropology are among the subjects the Conservatives would like to cut

I can't imagine the stunts were part of the show with Barker in mind.

In case you didn't know by the way: David Nobbs was the script editor who saw the Some Mothers pilot script and thought it showed promise.

The first blurb for my book is in!

I’m so delighted that the brilliant Francesca Wade (whose new Gertrude Stein biography is amazing) had this to say about LIKE A CAT LOVES A BIRD
MEDIA REVIEWS
Bailey's slippery Spark is chaotic, complex, often hilarious, and constantly shapeshifting. His kaleidoscopic portrait illuminates Spark's life and work from every angle, yet - crucially - allows her the freedom she craved to confound and elude those who would try to pin her down. This is a deeply stylish, astute and illuminating biography of a fascinating writer - Francesca Wade, author of SQUARE HAUNTING

Barker being the original choice for Frank Spencer is mindboggling, you just can't imagine that.

That kind of playfulness. And switching between comedy and drama. But it did slump towards the end (cast tensions and there was a writers strike in the final year). But it was very adventurous for the time.

It felt like a big influence on Press Gang, did you see that, S? A lot of fourth wall breaking. I don’t know how that will have aged it now.

This is what I was wondering. More ‘a bit out of touch’ than outwardly horrible. I remember one of his other Room 101 selections was ‘there’s too much choice’ and sometimes I find myself agreeing these days.
