A small drop in an ocean of suck, but for the past few weeks friends have let me know that my book (Divided Armies), along w/ related articles + briefings, was removed from DoD reading lists & curricula for being "too woke"

Now JFQ has literally "unpublished" its review & any mention of the book ⬇️

Divided Armies: Inequality and Battlefield Performance in Modern War By Jason Lyall
Princeton University Press, 2020
Women on the Frontlines of Peace and Security 2015 JFQ Authors,

Your NDU Press team that produces Joint Force Quarterly (JFQ) was directed to “scrub” our website for any material that is defined in the attached memo. We were given until 5 March at noon (assume EST) to comply.

The MSWord document attached details our compliance which includes six issues and eleven articles including one from PRISM as well as one book tied to our site from another published and a book we published.

My team has disabled several JFQ links to comply and due to conditions here on my team, we have a larger “cut” than necessary to just remove the articles that fit the definition in the policy. We did so in this way due to the time allowed to comply. As an example, we have disabled some entire editions due to technical reasons, most often it would take more time to be precise to meet the deadline in the memo.

The editorial decisions on what was removed was mine to make and any mistakes I have committed are mine. I and my NDU Press team is committed to returning any material that doesn’t meet this policy’s constraints as soon as possible.

As we receive additional guidance and our abilities to be more precise in our digital offerings, I anticipate some material will be returned to the website. For now, articles that fit my interpretation of the memo have been removed from view.

I appreciate your concern for your work which was properly vetted when it was prepared to be published. Of course, DoD used the policies in place at the time your articles were submitted for review. It would seem those policies are changing. I am committed to seeking relief as best I can for the return of your articles.

Please reach out to me if you have any questions or would like to talk with me about this action.

Sincerely,

Bill

Happy to have celebrated the 14th of July (in advance) aboard the LHD « Mistral », which was in Copenhagen as part of the mission « Jeanne d’Arc ». Beautiful moment when His Majesty Frederik X participated in the ceremony, and delivered his speech in French.

In the article, we develop a framework of how state and companies can interact, voluntarily or not, in order to support the state’s statecraft objectives.

Received this book on how strategy is being taught in the US, France and Czechia, which references the lectures on strategy I gave when I was at the @ihedn.bsky.social as examples of dialectical thinking.
Apparently, there is a « Schmitt’s triangle » now…
