New in @pnas.org we assess future #climate exposure for 32,089 species of #trees🌳
🔹69% face unprecedented climates in ≥10% of range
🔹In taiga & Amazonia >50% of local tree diversity exposed
🔹 31% of species retain >90% of range in stable climates -> important climate refugia♨️

A natural language processing pipeline for large-scale extraction & digitization of plant functional trait information

New in #AppsPlantSci by @viktordo.bsky.social @patrickweigelt.bsky.social et al

The NLP pipeline used for the prediction of categorical and numerical traits based on textual species descriptions. The description first goes through a preprocessing pipeline and then enters the categorical machine learning (ML) pipeline (violet), categorical deep learning (DL) pipeline (blue), and numerical DL pipeline (green). Within the corresponding pipelines, the description is further preprocessed if necessary and then tokenized and transformed into a vector embedding. Finally, the vector embedding is put into the corresponding model head and the model returns a prediction with an associated confidence score.

Dani's new prepr. (she doesn't have bsky)

🌿 Tropical Africa has up to 84% fewer ferns than other tropical regions. Massive extinctions during the Paleogene and Miocene wiped out native lineages, with over half of current diversity coming from recolonization.

Summary graph of the dispersal event reconstructions of the buildup of fern diversity on the main tropical continents. The circles show the total numbers of fern species in each continent (dashed circles) and the numbers of species included in the phylogeny (filled circle), with the colored pie segments showing the biogeographical origins of the current fern species, corresponding to lineages present in a continent over the last 66 my. The bar graphs indicate the timing of the first appearance of an extant fern lineage on each continent. Lines indicate the direction of the dispersal events between areas, and the numbers correspond to the mean numbers of dispersal events.

Why do some plants thrive in specific regions but not in others?

Researchers at our Uni explored the factors shaping plant distributions and how these patterns have changed over millions of years: www.uni-goettingen.de/en/3240.html...

showing stream in foreground, flanked by lush, green flourishing trees in front of mountains in background which are grey-brown and show a much harsher environment. The interplay of environmental conditions and geographical barriers such as mountains and lakes determine where plants thrive – an international study shows how these patterns have developed over millions of years. In many cities, universities and colleges are closing their doors for a day, in protest against the proposed cuts in higher education. The strike is an initiative of, among others, @woinactie.bsky.social, the @aob.nl and @fnv.bsky.social, the student unions and various action groups.
