I'm old. Just signed a contract to write a textbook. I've written a dozen books before - research monographs. But I've never had the audacity to think I could write about an entire field. But now I have. Check back in 12 months for info on "The East in Western Media: A Critical Introduction".

New article: my response to Peter Katz's connection of karate, self-defence & fascism. In my response, I connect fascism to Donald Trump (quelle surprise!), masculine BS, the film 'Nobody' & 'A History of Violence', among a few other things.

@danhf.bsky.social That is a very sensible decision. It is now, has always been and will forever be a huge wobbling studio set of twee British children’s telly tedium

Brilliant stuff from Conor Heffernan @physcstudy.bsky.social on “expertise creep” and platform authority

And then the man who made up lies about the Mayor of London puts soldiers on evermore city streets in his country

All power has thick walls. All power insulates from reality. Absolute power – absolute loss of reality. - Lindqvist

That would be what we call “Saturday”. Just wait till you work out what a “Sunday” is for.

News just in: Tommy Robinson seen feeding swans to Nigel Farage! Then they wrestled naked on the swans’ carcasses and laughed about tax avoidance and how morality is now a one-way street. Them’s the facts, as I’ve heard them, from reliable sources.

I honestly think that this, most of what is going on in the world, and most of what goes on in and around martial arts and combat sports in general, should be analysed through the lens provided by Klaus Theweleit in his epic 2 volume study, 'Male Fantasies'.

In another demented twist, the very publicly Jewish intellectual Judith Butler is in the Trump regime's gunsights for ... (wait for it)... antisemitism. Yep. McTrumpyism, flooding the zone with evermore madness on the way to instituting Gilead.

What is happening to Judith Butler – a Jewish intellectual – in the name of fighting ‘antisemitism’ is outrageous

Let's pick up this gauntlet: AI is neither the death of the humanities nor the human: it is rather the challenge that forces us to define and explore the 'extra' or 'other' that we think we are, or are about.

Why A.I. May be the Best Thing that’s Ever Happened to the Humanities
It is understandable to be nervous about the fate of the humanities right now.

From 1994 to '96 I did an MA in cultural studies at Leeds Uni. Now, 30 years later, I am going to be external examiner on that very same MA. Such a bizarre cluster of feelings. I did 3 degrees in Leeds, from 1989 to 2001, but I haven't actually been back to the city since about 2002...!
