Graph of job-finding rates of jobseekers provided automated recommendations based on experience or profile. Those recommended occupations based on their profile were more likely to find a job.

Despite the rise of online job search platforms, many jobseekers still struggle to find suitable employment. Automated occupation recommendations promise to help workers with better job matches. This column uses an experiment in Switzerland to compare two types of occupation recommendations for jobseekers – one based on workers’ experience and another on their profile of assessed skills. Profile-based recommendations are effective for jobseekers previously mismatched in their roles or with limited work experience. Policymakers should consider integrating automated occupation recommendations more systematically into public employment services.
