A feast for the eyes! 😍 One of the finest Carolingian coins ever seen, à gold solidus of Louis the Pious, minted in the 810s, in an auction with Jean Elsen. 💯% genuine as die-linked with previously known coins.

For #EpigraphyTuesday an amazing #Roman gold fibula (a decorative pin for fastening garments/a brooch) carrying the Latin inscription VTERE FELIX - use this happily, one of the most common inscriptions on Roman finger rings and fibulae.

From Ostrovany, Slovakia, late 3rd c. AD

Roman gold fibula shaped like an ornate crossbow, richly decorated with filigree and granulation, featuring a Latin inscription “VTERE FELIX” on the bow. Photographed on a neutral grey background.

I would love to have used Liz Truss as an example of dodgy modern Anglo-Saxonism when writing this: www.cambridge.org/core/journal...

A mummy portrait of a soldier from Fayum in Egypt. Dating to around 130 AD, the portrait is part of the collections at the Altes Museum in Berlin. 📷 My own. #Fayum #AltesMuseum

I’m assuming you mean Danish settlement in the time of King Cnut and a rare pre-Conquest g(u)ild associated with Tola of Tolpuddle and her husband Orc.

The weights of these coins vary, but typically 1.2-1.4 grams.

Forgot to mention this yesterday, but this new volume--the Cambridge Companion to Christian Heresy, edited by Richard Flower--has now officially been published and should be available through Cambridge Core for those who have access.

Thanks Dominik. As I said, the point about the publisher comes from Simon directly - it is not the kind of thing one would say in print!
rorynaismith.bsky.social
Simon once said that it was the publisher who insisted that Asser’s pagani had to be translated as ‘Vikings’ or ‘Danes’. I think yhe translators do mention this in the notes, but it is a problem.
