I got my first Mac in maybe 2000. Anyway, just after they switched back to being unix inside (these facts not unconnected) and the UI was a sort of mix of flat and skeuo. I seem to remember a lot of brushed chrome. It was ok. But the more the UI took from typography, the better I liked it.

I think that's not quite the history? Macs used to be more than usually skeuomorphic in the 90s, and got increasingly so, due to better graphics I guess, before the iPhone which just carried that on. Then iirc they fired the previous design guy and suddenly everything got the flat Jony Ive treatment

A lot of people don't seem to like the new macOS interface style, but I think it's great.
It's true, 2026 will be the Year of the Linux Desktop in the funniest possible way.

Internationally? Mostly just North America, no?

One can shoehorn other peoples' ranks into that system but it doesn't really fit, e.g. last I knew, you could retire as a lecturer in the UK or a docent in NL.
