yeah even Charles got lucky in the sense that his family didn’t have the funds but he had a family friend who owned a karting circuit. he still struggled all the way through karting to receive proper funding. but pay drivers are absolutely not uncommon. and people are always delicate about the convo

The revelations in court that Lando Norris paid for testing and FP1 sessions aren't news to anyone who's worked in motorsport.

Drivers paying teams for sessions, either directly or via sponsors, is the norm, not the exception.

also a lot of this is not unique to motorsports. it happens in others as well. you often have to come from money and get private training time to climb up the ladder

exactly!! i never in a million years would ever feed into that. when i worked in sports it was a hard no no and the farthest we ever went was referring to a friend group by the nickname their teammates gave them. it’s an easy boundary to follow
