NEW: There’s a disaster unfolding in Alaska right now. And no major network is covering it.

The remnants of Typhoon Halong battered western Alaska overnight. Homes, with people in them, have literally been swept into the Bering Strait.

At least 20 are missing. No comment from any federal agency.

How long ago was that? You may have been using biodiesel, which is too wet for a lot of engines to be healthy. Renewable Diesel is a perfect drop-in replacement for petrodiesel, and we're now using about 65% RD here in CA! Petrodiesel is on the way out here!

I know people get mad about direct air capture, but we've got a century of emissions to stuff back underground, and DAC of some kind is going to be how we do it. It can't replace emission reductions, but we need both to truly solve this problem.

So here's the thing: We have a *huge* amount of productive farmland which produces *way* more calories than we need. We can use a reasonable and thoughtful fraction for fuel for things that are hard to electrify without any problem at all.

We'll also need DAC in the future to remove a GT+ of C.

It's going to be a *very* long time before we have a truly clean replacement for intercontinental flights, so we're going to need to figure out efficient crops to turn into SAF. It won't be corn or palm, that's for sure!

Renewable diesel as a bridge to electric trains and trucks is great too.

I think it's really unhelpful to lump all biofuels in together, just as it's unhelpful to include burning biomass in renewable averages for e.g. air pollution.

We all know Palm oil biofuels are an ecological disaster, and corn ethanol is very energy negative. Soy RD is solid though, and useful!

if i've learned one thing from doing union stuff while also doing other forms of organizing, it's that you're better off with people you disagree with who are nevertheless trying to do the same thing as you than with people you agree with who aren't trying to do anything
