Whenever people complain about the number of folks relying on food stamps, it is worth reminding them that SNAP is, by too large of a degree, a subsidy for corporations that refuse to pay a living wage and their political allies who reject public policy prescriptions to reduce income inequality.

Hell yeah Fillmore crossing!

Lowry Avenue reopens October 24
Hennepin County's reconstruction of Lowry Avenue (County Road 153) from Central Avenue to Johnson Street in Northeast Minneapolis is nearly complete.
When it reopens to traffic on Friday afternoon it will be a safer, more comfortable street for people walking, rolling, biking, and taking transit
Improvements include
• A repaved road with one lane of traffic in each direction, traffic calming extensions at each intersection, new curbs and ramps for improved safety and better accessibility
• A shared-use path with raised crossings along the north side of Lowry Avenue for people walking, biking and rolling
• A new sidewalk along the south side of Lowry Avenue
• Wider green boulevards to provide more space between traffic and people walking or rolling
• New decorative streetlights
• Updated drainage facilities
• New signals at Johnson Street
• New crossing at Fillmore Street with a flashing user-activated light

One of the things that would move my late father to tears of rage was that there were any hungry people in such a prosperous country. Find your local food orgs and donate; money if you can, as they can make it go much further than individual food drop-offs and respond to their community needs.

I want more people to care that SNAP benefits are being cut off on November 1. 40% of SNAP beneficiaries are children. This is callous and vile.

This is tragic. The loss of friction deprives people of something crucial. What happens between imagination and creation is ineffable—it entails struggle, iteration, joy, and frustration, disappointment, and pride. It is the process through which we enact agency. It is how we make meaning and move through the world. To lose that, I fear, is to capitulate on our very humanity.

The Strib’s Karen Tolkkinen has devoted column after column after column to her stubborn belief that trans kids are destroying opportunities for girls to compete in sports at school.

It’s her weird mission. She’s fucking obsessed.

Anyway, great letter from Max Maher today.

Karen Tolkkinen's column "Transgender athletes should not compete with girls, but everyone deserves a place to play" (StarTribune.com, Oct. 9) builds its case on emotion, not evi-dence. She acknowledges that "nobody knows how common" transgender athletes are in Minnesota, yet argues for restrictive policies anyway. That's not fairness; that's fear.

There's also no evidence that transgender participation has taken opportunities from anyone. The Minnesota State High School League already reviews eligibility case by case to ensure both inclusion and competitive balance. The system is working as intended - quietly and responsibly.

The idea that girls are being forced to sacrifice is a political talking point, not a measurable fact. What's really being asked of us is whether we believe every student deserves a place to belong, even those whose identity or experience we may not fully understand.

High school sports were never just about winning. They teach teamwork, discipline and self-respect, lessons that lose meaning if we start excluding students who simply want to play. Protecting opportunity for all young people is how we strengthen fairness, not weaken it.
