Trijn van Leemput was a Dutch heroine of the Eighty Year’s War and became a lasting symbol of Utrecht’s resistance against the Spanish.

According to legend, in 1577 Trijn led a group of women to begin the demolition of the city’s Vredenburg Castle — hence the pickaxe and the brick.

Dromen uit Nazi-Duitsland, Charlotte Beradt verzamelde deze tussen 1933 en 1938 in haar boek 'Het Derde Rijk der dromen'. Beradt is volgens @beatricedegraaf.bsky.social een bijzondere auteur: 'Zij heeft eigenlijk iets heel dappers gedaan. Zij heeft die dromen beschreven als historische bronnen.'

Just a reminder, this is the image of the middle ages I grew up with, it was from a series called "Van nul tot nu" (from zero to now) and was published in Donald Duck magazine and read in schools.
I loved these books, still do, but well, 40 years later they're a bit outdated...

Er zijn schrijvers van wie je alles wil lezen. De romans en reisverhalen van Joseph Roth (1894-1939) zijn schitterend. Hij waarschuwde al vroeg voor het nationaal-socialisme, ontvluchtte Duitsland voorgoed in 1933 en heeft ook in Amsterdam gewoond. Vandaag is zijn geboortedag.

Sterfdag J.R.R. Tolkien (1892-1973), die als de aartsvader van de moderne fantasy wordt gezien. Schepper van 'The Hobbit', de trilogie 'The Lord of the Rings' en 'The Silmarillion'. Naar dit laatste boek is popgroep Marillion (u weet wel, van de hit 'Kayleigh') vernoemd.

Beetje aan het puzzelen op de 17de-eeuwse bibliotheek (nou ja, het boekenkastje) van de Staten-Generaal. Dit is hun exemplaar van de werken van Jacob Cats uit 1655 (KB, KW 1789 D 10). Volgens de catalogus van de SG had het boek ooit 'dicke siilvere slooten', maar die zijn verdwenen.

Op de plaats van het huidige Westbroekpark in Den Haag werd op 29 augustus 1913 een grote landbouwtentoonstelling geopend. Het hele land verzorgde bijdragen. Paviljoens waren er oa voor 'moderne werktuigen', een kunstmestafdeling, kaasfabricage en staatsbosbeheer.

Het schilderij 'De Stier' van Paulus Potter uit 1647 is een bekend schilderij. Ook de Fransen waren na hun inval in 1795 onder de indruk van het werk en brachten het naar Frankrijk. In 1815 kwam ‘De Stier’ terug en werd bij de oprichting van het Mauritshuis (1822) opgenomen in de collectie. 1/3

Franeker, 27 augustus 1828. Eise Eisinga, de bouwer van het inmiddels wereldberoemde Planetarium, overleed. Toen in het voorjaar van 1774 het einde der tijden werd gevreesd doordat de aarde uit zijn baan zou worden geslingerd, besloot de nuchtere amateurastronoom Eisinga dit te bestrijden. 1/4

Op 26 augustus 1666 stierf Antwerpenaar Frans Hals te Haarlem. Hals, wiens ouders Antwerpen ontvluchtten, werd een van de bekendste schilders uit de Nederlandse Gouden Eeuw.
