Yes the idea it would start WW3 has always been nonsense. But the situation isn’t the same.

We should think about what helps Ukraine most at the moment. I’ve become less sure shooting down a cheeky Russian jet over Estonia necessarily does.

Maybe, and they could just lie and say it happened already.

But I still think the chorus of celebratory / panicked western headlines in the event of a Russian just being shot down for real could help maintain support for the war in Russia as things gets harder to justify.

And without cheap long term solutions we could slip into a routine where Putin chews up expensive and limited European air defence systems with cheap dud drones.

Annoying but it *might* actually be the best strategy to not take the bait. While also ramping up aid to Ukraine as much as possible.
