Stiff competition but Vance is probably the worst fascist goblin in the WH rn.

Smarter than opportunistic idiots like Witkoff and more ideological and actively evil than Trump.

And he wraps all his smug viciousness in this faux ”well now good sir” civility that’s sooo hateable.
Makes you wonder what Vance will say if Trump orders a US military attack on Venezuela

I think it’s worth saying that assuming a ceasefire in place is reached in Ukraine—like with Israel and HAMAS in Gaza—it’ll merely be a temporary suspension in fighting that doesn’t resolve core tensions that created the conflict.

Russia isn’t going to stop wanting to erase Ukrainian sovereignty.

We can only read tea leaves rn but this reads much more like soft launching US abandonment than kite flying a really bad deal imo.

Only Ukrainians can make that choice but I con’t see the current list of concessions leading anywhere.

"Ukraine may soon face an extremely difficult choice. Either the loss of dignity or the risk of losing a key partner," he said

Just zero consistency in terms of universal justice or human rights, will we ever stop giving people like this a free ride on the Irish left jfc

I find a lot of Labour and SocDem contributions on Mercosur kind of annoying, because they’ll rightly question environmental standards and deforestation in Brazil, but then turn around and downplay / ignore domestic deforestation and beef farming status quo (the largest source of Irish emissions!!).

Yeah it’s either hard US security guarantees real enough for Ukraine to trust them (would take way more than trust me bro, boots on the ground or close to it), or yet another token promise which Ukraine / Europe will obviously reject.
One reason (of several) I'm sceptical of the Witkoff deal is that it's apparently contingent on independent US security guarantees and that's such a colossal reversal of US policy that I struggle to see how it survives contact with political reality.

I’m not a marketing consultant but I really feel like some companies miss a trick when they assume their American voice over ads will do for all English speaking countries.

Some of them have that forced yank corporate enthusiasm that’s just like nails on chalkboard to my Irish ears.

Every year I get more woke and also have less energy to argue about politics in the real world. I care about a lot of stuff and I'll go to the odd protest and all that but if I'm at a Christmas party and someone says British rule actually benefitted Ireland a lot I'm like "wow that's fascinating".

Poll after poll shows Irish people support neutrality and that's unlikely to change anytime soon. I'm increasingly "neutral" on the debate myself!

But do the authors here also think it's wrong for us to "deride" defence spending or NATO membership if it "matters" to some of our European neighbours?

There are good ideas about how to improve EU democracy but this is always a weak argument imo when most European countries have powerful prime ministers that aren’t directly elected either.

Countries with powerful directly elected Presidents (France, Poland, let alone the US) don't make me envious.
Funny that he never says that about China or Russia.

At least von der Leyen is approved by democratically elected representatives

Attended one of my mother’s residents association meetings once and watched a load of over 50s expressing great relief that a local development was “thankfully just a nursing home“ instead of “much worse” (apartments)
Nothing like a proposal for a modest amount of lower-income housing nearby to find out who your neighbors are.
