Same. I don't think people outside of Maine realize that she's not great. Having had numerous friends in the state house, the things I've heard consistently make her my 2nd or 3rd choice.

It's too early for me to commit to a candidate, but Graham speaks to me.
blackgirlinmaine.bsky.social
Watching people who don't live in Maine speculating on the candidates is interesting. If I didn't know better, it seems like some folks want Suzy "I'm concerned" Collins to win.
blackgirlinmaine.bsky.social
I'll just say this. People in Maine aren't excited for our 77 year old governor to be running. The fact that the establishment is going hard for her is problematic, especially after Biden and his age.

I can't speak to the specifics, but I know there were, in fact, local folks on this team as well. That's where he started.

Lastly, while Mills was lifted up for her willingness to push back on Trump. Her actual track record on progressive issues was less than satisfying. She wasn't a friend to our Indigenous communities here.

I know more, but that's all I'm comfortable saying.

Most people saying this stuff aren't in Maine.

Using the national frame for a candidate like Graham without understanding Maine won't get you far. I'll say this. I know a lot of Maine political folks. Some are my closest friends, and none of them are riding for Mills. The energy is for Graham and maybe Jordan. Also, we have RCV here.

Maine is a small state. It's 1.2 million people in a geographically large state. If dude was a douche, someone would be talking.

Man is an oyster farmer. Folks who do that work tend to be pretty salt of the earth.

You literally can run to be on the City Council of the largest city in Maine (Portland) and spend mere pocket change and win. People also know their politicians here in a way, I never knew them in Chicago. I have not heard one person who knows Graham or has met him say anything weird about him.

Maine is a different kind of place. There's a deep sense of community engagement. People will decide to just run for office. I did it 4 years ago. So if you understand Maine, you better understand how a Graham happens. I understand the desire to compare him to Fetterman, but it's doubtful.

As I stated earlier, we share peeps in common, though we haven't met yet. I know someone who was part of the folks he consulted with about running. Local labor liked him. He was harbormaster for years and pretty involved in his various communities. Maine is the kind of place a person will run.

I literally have a voicemail he left me the week he announced his run. We share colleagues/peeps, and he reached out. I missed his call. I know folks who know him and who have met him, and they all speak highly of him. His voicemail was cool, he came across as sincere.

Trump at the Charlie Kirk memorial event: "They fired sniper rifles at ICE agents, and me. But I made a turn at a good time. I made a turn at a good time. Charlie couldn't believe it, actually."

It doesn't, and that appears to be the point. Stephen Miller was quoted as saying he wants to see America shrink to 100 million people. Gutting the CDC is definitely one way to accomplish that goal. They actively wish death upon a lot of us.

I’d been thinking for a while that it seems like a startling number of rappers have died in their mid-40s to mid-50s from natural causes but it didn’t really feel like an epidemic until I saw this list. 😦

I live in Maine, and I haven't met Graham yet, but we share a number of folks in common. I hear he's really the real deal, and I agree with this assessment. Folks are truly pumped about him. No one I know is pumped about Janet. She has been an ok governor, but that's it.

Not that anybody comes to me for Maine politics, but the fact that the Democrats successfully convinced a 77yo Governor to primary the 41yo progressive, is today's example of why the Democrats fucking stay failing.

Susan Collins is 72 and if Schumer gets his way, she'll be the YOUNGER choice!

This two-parter below is exactly why it's hard to make clothes in the United States.

Let's look at how much it costs to produce a button-up shirt in the US. 🧵
Someone on Twitter replies to me: "meh. buy american or stfu."

Two hours later, in a separate thread, the write: "$30 for a single button-up is ridiculous unless it is decent quality silk."

Really would like people to shift their thinking to the point where they see themselves and the people around them as the people who will collectively navigate through this moment.

Once upon a time, you could legitimately think of a notable newspaper columnist as someone who had fought their way to the top of a competitive field. Nowadays, for every six-figure salaried pro, there are 20 people saying smarter things online for free. But the money still flows.

The U.S. is imploding, literally dissolving its democratic mechanisms—in a public way.

Yet, Black people are and will continue to thrive.
How? We take care of each other. All Black people know each other—even, perhaps especially if we’ve never met. It’s an innate safety mechanism we all utilize.
