Too often these days I feel like we’re building an economy for cars and chatbots instead of a society for human beings.

"Make cities safe and fun for kids to run around and play in" is a pretty good guiding light for urban planning

A Redditor made a graph of the percent of population of US and Canada metro areas over 1 million that live in a given density. When they ordered them by average density the lowest ranked Canadian metro area, Edmonton, was ranked 14th between Miami and Washington. 6 of the top 15 were Canadian metros

I did this, took like 30 min.
Points I kept hammering: domestic cloud, regulations around copyright and likeness rights, focusing on machine learning with concrete, real world uses (creating new drugs, etc), the damage done by slop, the need to listen to AI experts who are realists, not boosters.

The single best way the City of Victoria could boost downtown business would by to get rid of the wasteful and ugly on street parking #yyj

It’s C — Calgary is great to ride in the winter. Idk why people can’t understand this. Most days are sunshine and hardpack.

I was thinking more like municipal offices and school boards etc. - more people are elected to those offices than anywhere else, and the pay is … not good. Provincial and federal offices at least pay wages that can support a family solo, which is more or less a requirement of those jobs.

We welcome all bandwagon jumpers for either or both teams. 😂

Don’t forget extremely low pay for all but the highest offices!

- plus party discipline choking you into taking stupid positions you don't want to take for most offices
- and laws that put all your finances and investments under scrutiny, while the President is making billions

...all for the chance, just a chance, to appeal to the better angels of our nature.

Don't forget:

- death threats from incel types and attacks on your family
- grotesque misogyny for any woman at every step
- protests in front of your house by activists who insist it's a legit tactic for almost any grievance
- and the endless, endless listening to grim, sad or stupid rants...

Fools. Don't they grasp that they're missing an chance to:
- be relentlessly criticized by people who have no clue what you do
- get blamed for things over which they have little control
- be constantly exposed to judgemental scrutiny
- work long hours only to be told how lazy you are

And more...!

The future... The polar ice caps have melted, covering the Earth with water. Those who survived have adapted... to a new world…the Waterworld. Also, the Tigers and Mariners are still playing Game 5 of the ALDS somehow.

baseball is the best preparation for death because it does not come with a clock that tells you when your suffering will end one way or the other

really puts things in perspective

We have truly not yet figured out how to cope with a person or institution that is "aware" of climate change, "accepts the science", but then decides to continue actively worsening it anyway

We don't even have a word or a phrase for this!

Mark Carney’s climate inaction is at odds with his awareness of climate change’s existential threat
Climate action no longer seems to be a priority for Prime Minister Mark Carney, despite his previous activism. This is bad news for Canadians and the climate.
