“I think Paris is uniquely positioned to celebrate bold action from cities all over the world. Because in my observation Paris, and Mayor @annehidalgo.bsky.social, have been the most inspiring in the world over the last 10 years, really exemplifying those key words ‘further and faster.’” — BT
NEW: “Canadian urbanist @brenttoderian.bsky.social teamed up with the city of Paris and, in particular, its mayor, @annehidalgo.bsky.social on a new exhibition that shines a light on cities and global climate action.”

Thanks very much @momentummag.bsky.social for the great questions! #Paris

This will be an interesting year for my practice advising cities. Since I’m saying no to work requiring travel to the United States, I’ll be saying yes to more opportunities outside of North America, balanced with work within Canada. Looking forward to reconnecting with some fav parts of the world.

Something nice, amid the horrors of the world.
“Someone with a 1-hr car commute needs to earn 40% more to be as happy as someone with a short walk to work. On the other hand, if someone shifts from a long commute to a walk, their happiness increases as much as if they’d fallen in love.” #CityMakingMath

Absolutely agree.
But I also engage or get engaged with people I disagree with, and in almost every case discussions are civilized. Of course, disengage and block at first signs of bad faith and trolling helps. But it's only an echo chamber if you make it such. Following the right people helps too.
1. I don’t agree with those who slam the engagement experience here on Bluesky. I can’t speak for others’ experiences, but mine is 98% positive & constructive.
2. A key to that for me is immediately blocking negative, insulting or toxic sources.
3. I don’t like block lists. I make my own judgement.

In the grand scheme of things €300m is nothing. Wandsworth Council is spending £4MILLION on beautifying 100metres of a bridge underpass and the Labour government is spending £9BILLION on just 12-miles of new road
IMPORTANT: Paris has more than “vision.” They have clear plans. Including a 5-Year Pedestrian Plan:
- 300 million € invested by 2026
- 100 new hectares of ped space
- 100 more “streets for kids”
- Focus on 0 pedestrian deaths #VisionZero
- Longer ped cross times

Does your city follow smart plans?

Along the lines of "everyone should have the experience of working retail," I wish everyone could experience just a month of living in a wheelchair
12. Open your eyes to whether your city is truly accessible for everyone–every curb cut or lack thereof–for the disabled, people of all ages, & for every parent with a stroller. Find ways to travel a mile in their shoes or chairs, and listen to them. Amplify their voices in calling for improvements.

I don't walk to work but I do most of my errands and shopping on foot, and this is absolutely true for me.

Exactly the reason why I never use block lists anywhere. Moderators of these lists can and do make mistakes and often they're just way too sensitive imo.

I sometimes look through block lists to block people, but even then I check every account individually.

Same. I think Bluesky becomes a reflection of decisions you make re: who you follow, who you engage with, and being comfortable with blocking people who give off red flags and come out of nowhere with comments meant to agitate/bait you.

Don't take bait, block freely, follow ppl who are inclusive.

Wow - again, if you build separated, protected bike lanes, people will use them. The better and more connected the routes are, the more ridership increases.

2. Speak at City Hall in support of something good for your city, rather than just going to oppose things. And before you oppose something (such as well-designed density, new housing choices, or affordable housing), think carefully about who it’s meant to help, and put yourself in their place.
