I think more is being made of this than is warranted.
The part, the SF-20/B from Lightware, is a commercial LIDAR sensor. The laser in it is a ~900nm, ~1.8mW device, putting it very far below the Wassenaar dual-use limits requiring export controls & NCACC approval.

The difference between a Rule of Law state and a police state is that when people see their neighbors taken by the police in the former, they can expect a fair trial and humane treatment. In the latter, people need to save their neighbors from the police.

Tbf, there's plenty of precedents of Nobel Peace Prize awarded despite winners bombing innocents, ordering targeted executions, unleashing forced disappearances, plotting to topple democracy and being vile racists. But those were all independent decisions of the committee. None of them demanded it.

The Nobel Peace Prize will be announced tomorrow from Oslo at 10am GMT. Trump, despite ostentatiously gunning for it & even trying to pressure the fiercely independent committee, will not receive it.

That's why I was taken aback when the Executive Editor asked me, "How do you think we can monetize our website?" I really wanted to say "how the fuck should I know?" and also "why are you asking me?" In retrospect it should've been a glaring red flag that the adults in charge had no idea what they were doing and that it would be up to me and my peers to figure it out. But that's something I wouldn't realize until much later on, after years of expecting someone else to fix it. Until I realized I was the adult.
