“The lesson is clear. Together, European financing and Ukrainian ingenuity can build an effective deterrent against external threats, even as the US pulls back.”
“Ukraine’s experience since February 2022 has upended long-held assumptions about the economics of war — from the belief that size and industrial capacity are a guarantee of victory to misunderstandings about mobilisation, logistics and adaptability.”
Ukraine, Europe and the new economics of war
By maintaining stability and innovating to hold out against Russia, Kyiv has shown that size matters less in conflict than it used to

This article opens with a 3-year-old forced to represent herself in court. We live in a fundamentally sick country.
There is no sight that more efficiently puts the lie to immigration “court” than the common sight of children “representing themselves.” Children too small to climb into the chair, children in pajamas who don’t know where they are, children not yet old enough to speak.

Let me tell you a story. Perhaps you can guess where this is going... though it does have a bit of a twist.

I was poking around Google Scholar for publications about the relationship between chatbots and wellness. Oh how useful: a systematic literature review! Let's dig into the findings. 🧵

Here's the reality this example illustrates:

It's not even just about people blindly trusting what ChatGPT tells them. LLMs are poisoning the entire information ecosystem. You can't even necessarily trust that the citations in a published paper are real (or a search engine's descriptions of them).

Heartbreaking. The University of Nebraska will terminate its entire Earth science department.

One of the country's most successful and respected geology & climate programs: gone.

When ideologues & politicians are threatened by the very act of studying climate change, I wonder: who of us is next?
It's over.

Despite the fact that the academic council recommended against it, despite the fact that the program brought in more tuition than it cost, and despite the fact that Nebraskans need & deserve this expertise, Earth & Atmospheric Sciences will be cut.

BREAKING: ‘This hurts’: UNL eliminates 4 programs despite faculty, student pleas
The University of Nebraska-Lincoln eliminates the Earth and atmospheric sciences 8-0, educational administration 7-1, statistics 7-1, textiles, merchandising and fashion design 7-1 programs.

The thing is, feminists have long had fluent, evidence-backed arguments showing that breaking free of essentialised gender roles benefits everyone, including men and boys who may be feeling isolated.

But we live in societies structured on ignoring women, so instead we hear from these guys...
If this is the alternative to the manosphere, we are in trouble.

I'm not sure it's in the self interest of America's tech bro billionaires to suggest that we bring back public executions to punish the most destructive people in our society.

Headlines written by editors (not journalists) who care more about attracting attention than making people wanting to actually read the articles is a big part of the problem with information.
In this case, it also happens to falsifying history and sweetening slavery
A new report on dietary findings in a select area of Pompeii likely inhabited by enslaved people came out in Scavi di Pompei. Many newspapers are now running w/a headline about Roman slaves “eating better” than free Romans. pompeiisites.org/e-journal-de... Let’s discuss why this is problematic
