The vampire lore that I'm most fascinated by is the OCD thing. It's why the Sesame Street vampire loves to count! Ah ah ah!

There's a nice article by Siobhan Roberts about the Bridges 2025 conference in Eindhoven in the NY Times. I can now say that I am in The NY Times! (A photo credit for the shot of Chaim Goodman-Strauss and Edmund Harriss,... but still!) www.nytimes.com/2025/10/10/s...

4 yrs ago today, a family member managed a truly spectacular own goal, splintered his domestic bliss, & in the process, united the world for a day.

On popular request, I shall now recreate the livetweet thread from that day

So gather around children, for this is the tale of The Rice Truck Saga

Wait till this guy finds out when daylight savings was invented
anonopin.bsky.social
Daylight saving times should be abolished. We are no longer living in the 19th century, we can do without. It'll be great for mental health, and people hating early darkness during the evening. BST timezone should be permanent

I've been thinking a lot about means recently!

Probably some combination of (1) teaching our data analysis unit in our STEM 101 course at Oglethorpe and (2) all of @howiehua.bsky.social's great posts surrounding Mean Girls Day.

I'd like to show how some of these various means are related.

🧵 [0]
A four-panel graphic showing formulas for four types of means. Each panel includes the formula and the name of the mean in bold text below.

Top left (red background): Arithmetic Mean, labeled “AM = (x₁ + ⋯ + xₙ) / n.”

Top right (dark blue): Geometric Mean, labeled “GM = ⁿ√(x₁ ⋅ … ⋅ xₙ).”

Bottom left (purple): Harmonic Mean, labeled “HM = n / (1/x₁ + ⋯ + 1/xₙ).”

Bottom right (dark green): Quadratic Mean, labeled “QM = √((x₁² + ⋯ + xₙ²) / n).”

We had a colleague last year who quit because we (as a school/org) couldn't just be normal about workload and stuff and so it just wasn't worth it. It was her first teaching job back from her mum-career-break.

Well done us, could've got another maths tchr back into classroom but we fucked it up

Sorry couldn't read it. Too much visual stress with that background
